June 8 - “A little chaplain-ing”

for one needed a bit of a quiet day. No particular reason. I was just tired. And what better thing to do when tired? We went for our walk. Two miles. Those mountain hikes must have been farther. Or just harder. Of course we do have issues here. It’s pretty hot. And definitely overly humid. But we made it. Checking off those exercise boxes.

We also had some rather mundane chores to run in the afternoon. We returned the shirt Chris got me and got a different size. Perfect fit. We also picked up some Grub-X. That’s the stuff that’s supposed to kill June bugs before they have a chance to become June bugs. That’s the only way to keep some semblance of a yard around here. Those fat little worms live eating grass roots. Our final stop was at Randall’s. Two prescriptions for me. Filled up the gas tank, too. Why?

Last night I had the honor of doing a little chaplain-ing. I prayed the invocation and benediction at the Galveston Fire Department Awards Ceremony. The room was packed with friends and family, and the fire fighters stretched across the back, standing two or three deep. Pretty impressive display of men and women of courage and respect. Nine new hires had their badges pinned.  Several others, after a grueling time of study and testing, received promotions and their new badges.  And several were noted as having  retired after 30+ years of service.

Others were being recognized with service ribbons for everything from community connections to peer counseling to actually saving lives. They usually respond to accolades by saying, “Just doing the job.”   That’s right, brothers and sisters, but the job you do … oh, the job!  Thank you so much for your dedication to excellence. I’m proud of you.

We are heading to Waco yet again this morning. We have to arrive before 1 p.m.  Not that we need to eat lunch or anything. But 1 p.m. is start time for AnnaGrace’s dance recital. Can’t miss that one. She’s flittering around in two different events. We are also planning to watch Zak’s girlfriend flutter around in her dances. Assuming, of course, that she doesn’t mind (and that she is still “girlfriend”!).

Psalms‬ ‭4‬:‭8‬ ‭ says, In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Father, be with AnnaGrace and Lindsey in their dances today. Amen.
