We began the prep work for mulching the front flower beds. Of course that means we didn’t get to the actual mulching right away. First we had to pull out as many weeds as we could possibly find. So … hands and knees. Chris was having some balance issues, though. Thankfully we were embedded between some pretty sturdy bushes, so she only actually plopped over and sat down one time. We finished phase one of the project in record time. But then it was incredibly hot. Mix that factor with Chris’ “issue,” and it was time to break for lunch.
We
did continue the project after lunch, though. Dumping the bags of mulch and
spreading it out - by hand, of course. We found out pretty quick that we
didn’t have enough mulch. Sigh. Put another trip to Home Depot on the list.
Cut
to day two … We headed out right after breakfast. Ten bags of mulch loaded, and
it was back home. Chris didn’t even buy any extra plants or anything. We
finished up the bed in the front fairly quickly. It was actually the smaller of
the two out there. The big one is on some future checklist. The back was a
little more complicated. Before the mulching could begin, Chris wanted to
separate some lilies she has growing strong back there. Once that was done, we
mulched out one little bed and most of another. Oh, we had enough mulch.
But there was some more lily separating that had to happen first. Those lilies
just can’t seem to get along. I did trim the rose bushes a bit while Chris
watered all the newly separated lilies. Oh, did I mention that the temperature
was 91 with a windchill of 104. Ouch.
We
spent the afternoon lolling around doing not much of anything. I stayed inside.
Chris occasionally went outside on the back porch to read and, in her words, to
“warm up.” Nope.
Psalms 143:10 says, “Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.”
Father,
thank you for protecting us out in the heat. Amen.
