I braved the physical world again yesterday. I mowed the grass. Chris started out doing the weedeating. Sadly, however, a loose strand of the spinning cable ripped into her leg, slicing a strip of skin in two places. One of started swelling like crazy as well. She has to be careful of such things because she’s on blood thinners. I took over the weed eater. She did do the sweeping, but she ended up in a chair with her leg propped up and an ice pack on the offending site. Fortunately, she had almost finished the back yard, and the front needed very little more than a quick once-over. My back was greatly appreciative.
The plumbers called around 9:30 to report that they were finishing up the job before us, so they would be on their way soon. Our friend warned us that the cost would be much higher than it used to be before Covid. He was right. To charge it, the cost would increase by 3.7%, so we had to transfer some money out of savings to cover the check. Welcome to the world of homeowner’s finances. But the “good news” didn’t stop there.
Shortly after ten they arrived and got started. And well over an hour later they loaded their monster snake machine up. The report was that we have several perfect storm occurrences happening. The old sewer line is made from concrete, a particularly porous substance. It is put together by just sliding the pieces into place with no sealing. Finally, in one place in particular, that supposed connection has separated, allowing all sorts of root incursion. On top of that, the roots are particularly thirsty because of the drought conditions, so we are pretty much doomed to repeat. And then came the estimate. To replace the line from the house to the street? $4500. Ouch. At least we have some time to think about that one.
Hebrews 13:16 says, And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
Father, please heal Chris leg cuts and bruises quickly. Amen.
