We sat together, once again entranced after twenty years. For two hours yesterday we enjoyed the 20th anniversary special of the Harry Potter movie series. And like so many other of these “specials,” we couldn’t believe it has been that long ago. Of course, we were more impressed with the books. I remember how they made their way through the Seaside youth group like wildfire. Melissa and Lora were the ringleaders of the Harry Potter books back then. Chris and I followed our pattern of trying to stay up to date on what books were of interest to the youth of the day. And the writing was, indeed, captivating. The fact that it is set in England made it even more interesting for me. But as far as the special was concerned, we enjoyed the film clips from the movies and the reminiscing from the actors and directors. It’s always fun to get a peek behind the scenes.
The
rest of our grand New Year’s Day was actually quite tame. We had our lunch of ham, cabbage and black-eyed
peas. Guess we are traditionalists at
heart after all. Chris worked on our
2021 Christmas/not-Christmas-anymore yearly letter. It’s been quite the year … again. It is always fun to try to summarize all of
our events into one concise, two-page document … with pictures.
We
finally got to see another Baylor basketball game. Even with them ranked number one in the nation,
for some reason we have been blacked out from seeing many of their games. They took care of business once again, albeit
in a close one, beating Iowa State. That
makes them 13-0.
And
we watched college football. Oklahoma
State coming from behind to beat Notre Dame was very exciting. I think our worship pastor Jim must have been
happy. That’s his old stomping
grounds. In fact, I think maybe he
cheered a bit too much. He texted that
he wasn’t feeling well. Get better, Jim.
We love you.
Finally,
we watched some of the Sugar Bowl.
Baylor’s football team was playing in that one. They played Mississippi State, the home of
one of the Heisman Trophy candidate quarterbacks. Unfortunately, that young man was injured
early in the game, so it became a battle of the defenses, at least early
on. At half-time the score was 7-0 Baylor,
and the touchdown was scored by the defense on an intercepted pass that was run
back 96 yards for the score. Chris gave
up at halftime and went on to bed. I
managed to stay through a possession by each team in the second half, and
things didn’t look much different, so I finally signed off as well. I aroused at around 11:30 and checked the
final score. Baylor won that one
21-7. Good day for certain Baylor fans
in the Vaughan household in Waco.
Psalms
119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
Father,
please help Jim to wake up feeling much better today. Heal him quickly. Amen.
