July 8 – “What’s a Pokemon?”

Yesterday was Micah's six-year-old birthday party.  He was very excited to have his comparable cousin Zakary here to help celebrate, too.  We had the honor of taking Cousin Cailyn with us to the party so her Mom could study for a test scheduled for her first day back at school.  It is designed to see if the nursing students remember the math they have to use over and over again.  Makes a lot of sense, but doesn't make it any easier to study to take test the very first day back in school.  She'll do fine, though.

With a school teacher for a Mommy, Micah's party was always destined for great things.  He chose a Pokemon theme.  I didn't get it.  I never have understood exactly what a Pokemon is.  Some sort of innocuous monster?  A multi-colored bug?  And they have super powers, right?  I heard the kids talking about lightning.  I thought that was Thor, but he at least looks human.  Why can't these universes get it together and all be consistent with one another?  Everyone knows DC is the only real comic book universe.

There was a lot of water at the party.  Kids' pool.  Water guns of all shapes and sizes.  Slip-and-slides.  The kids had much fun.  Maybe that's the secret to the Pokemon thing – it all happens under water.  Christina then served some homemade pizzas.  But apparently they were somehow related to Pokemon as well.  A line of black olives separated the pizza into two halves.  They also formed a smaller circle in the middle.  Half of the pizza was covered with pepperonis.  I have no idea what the significance of that was.  But the symbol showed up again on the cake, which also had tiny replicas of the weird creatures crawling all over it.  I expected the gifts to be filled with the creatures as well, but at least they were things I could understand.  A video game.  Several Lego sets.  A t-shirt.  And my personal favorite from his other grandfather: a batch of carrots.  That's right.  Carrots.  With the green stuff still coming out of the top.  The kind Bugs Bunny chews on all the time.  That's Bugs Bunny.  He was a TV and movie star from an earlier era.  Micah loves to eat carrots, so that gift was a classic.  Art (that would be "other grandfather") cooked ribs for everyone who stuck around after the party.  The guy is an amazing cook.  Enough said on that one.

We came home to an eerily quiet house after having Josh's family here all week.  It was quite strange.  We watched the Astros win – also quite strange.  I'll take strange.

Psalms 9:7-8 says, "The Lord reigns forever; he has established his throne for judgment.  He will judge the world in righteousness; he will govern the peoples with justice."

Father, thank you for our great week with family.  Thank you for loud and silly children.  And for the quiet aftermath.  Amen.
