June 1 – “Turn Back”

We headed out at a quite leisurely pace for our overnight trip to Mansfield and the Bob Bryant funeral.  Just as we hit the causeway, Chris remembered something pretty important.  The shoes that go with the dress she was planning to wear to the funeral.  I assured her that Bob wouldn’t care if she wore her Sketchers tennies with that dress.  She agreed but was still not happy.  I suggested we could stop and buy her a new pair.  I knew that wouldn’t go over well, either.  She hates to shop, especially for shoes.  Well, for clothes of any kind.  By the time we hit the north side of the causeway the decision was made.  We turned back for the shoes.  Hey.  That sounds like it would make a great Country Western song – “Turn Back for the Shoes.”  Has a certain ring to it.  Besides, we were in no hurry.  It’s all part of the adventure experience.

As is our custom, we stopped in at Buc-ees for some lunch.  We ordered the usual.  I had one of their massive BLT sandwiches.  Chris had a chicken taco with extra pico.  And of course, we added some candied cashews for dessert.

We made it to the Huntley’s house in Midlothian around three.  The Huntley Hilton.  Diane made some lasagna for supper.  Good stuff.  And apparently an easy recipe.  Chris got a copy of it, so we’ll be seeing that one again in our future.

Larry introduced us to a new TV show called Day Tripper.  Some guy travels around visiting unusual places in Texas.  He also tries the food.  That guy can put away a hamburger.  He’s pretty funny as a host, but of course the star of the show is always the interesting place he is visiting.  There was one on this particular episode that is definitely on my must-see-in-person list now.  Not saying where.  I’ll keep it a secret until we can unveil some pics of our own.  But I’ll have to find that show, for sure.

Last night we went on into Mansfield for the funeral visitation time.  I guess some folks call it the wake.  And the place was absolutely packed.  We saw some old friends and acquaintances from our years at South Oaks Baptist Church.  It was especially good to talk with Bob’s son Brad.  He’s the one who brought down a crew from South Oaks to put up sheetrock in our house after Hurricane Ike.  I told him we had a little issue in our ceiling that he needed to come help us deal with.  Figured surely the warranty was still good after fourteen years.  He basically told me to call in some tape-and-bedders and they can cover up anything.  We laughed about that one.  It had become the by-word of the project back then.  Can’t believe he remembered.

Back at the Huntley’s, we ended up staying up late talking and catching up with them.  They are one of the couples we are joining for a trip to Hawaii in April of next year.  Hey.  That’s getting close, isn’t it?

Colossians 3:12 says, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.”

Father, thanks for the chances to relieve some old memories last night.  Please keep blessing the Bryant family.  Amen.
