August 8 – “A mystery guy in a red truck”

We have a Cousins Camp 2020 official theme song.  I still haven’t understood all the words, but that isn’t so unusual.  What I have heard is something about a fish on my knee, over and over again.  Odd.  It fits.  I told the kids they needed to write out all the lyrics for me.  All of them.  And none of this “repeat the chorus here” nonsense.

It was a good song for our official day one.  We went fishing right after breakfast.  Sadly, there was no live bait left on the Island.  That’s twice this week I have run into that.  But that didn’t stop these kiddos.  They grabbed the dead shrimp and squid and and dove right in.  Used up every bit of it, too.  Gotta say here that Luke was the star of this trip.  He caught the first fish, a keeper croaker.  He caught a few others, too.  He was the only one patient enough to wait them out.  There were scattered landings from the other guys as well, all pretty small, but no one cared.  Another highlight came when a mystery guy in a red truck stopped nearby.  Out of the blue he asked if we would like to have his catch of the day.  Absolutely, especially when he pulled out a nice-sized speckled trout.  That’ll make a welcome addition to our fish fry today.

For lunch yesterday we grilled some hamburgers and hot dogs.  Good stuff.  Then it was inside time for games and relaxing out of the heat.  After a while we headed over to Uncle Nathan and Aunt April’s farmhouse to meet the chickens.  And hedgehog.  And three dogs.

The boys fixed supper.  Yep.  Nani made the assignments.  Zak and Micah were in charge of the chicken strips.  Two huge trays full of them.  Felt like we were at Chic-Fil-A, but that was where Jachin was.  He had to work.  Trials of a working man with a brand new official government issued driver’s license.  Luke handled the corn.  Josiah did macaroni and cheese.  Caleb made the salad.  Where were the girls?  They were setting up the tent that was to be their quarters for the evening.

After supper it was time for a beach trip.  Uncle Nathan brought some surfboards and ran a mini-clinic.  Luke was the star again.  He stood up on the board right away and even made it look easy.  Josiah did a really good job as well.

By the time we got home and everyone had a shower, it was already 9:30.  After family worship the girls retired to their tent and watched a video.  The guys watched an episode of … you’ll never believe it … The Carol Burnett Show.  Then it was lights out.  Josh and Christi grabbed a cup of coffee and relaxed together on the back porch.  Chris continued washing beach towels and bathing suits for our return trip today.  I watched the Astros game on my phone app.  They kept me up until 12:30.  All that only to see them lose in the bottom of the 13th.  Ah, well.  I slept well …

2 Thessalonians 3:13 says, “And as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right.”

Father, day one was full and tiring, but everyone seemed to have fun.  Join us for day two, OK?  Amen.
