October 6 – “Because they’re pink”

We took a trip to WalMart and Randall's yesterday with Cailyn.  It was not nearly as scary as it could have been.  This one was my trip.  That meant I had a list.  Claritin D.  Deodorant.  A starfish.  Nametags.  A 3-ring notebook.  AA batteries.  That was it for WalMart.  Now to her credit, Cailyn somehow managed to pick up one of those little gift bags that are only big enough to hold a piece of candy or maybe a hot wheels car.  We have no idea how she did it, though.  We didn't go down that aisle, and as far as we could tell she never climbed out of the basket and climbed back in without us seeing her.  It was one of those amazing elastic arm kinds of events, I guess.  We asked why she picked those up.  Her answer came back in one of those, "of course this is why, how could you not know, you adults are so silly sometimes" tones.  "Because they're pink."  She later added something about then being for her Mommy, but she obviously hadn't had enough time to fully develop that scenario.  She wasn't nearly as forceful with that argument, but she knew that somewhere in there would be the reason these ignorant adults needed to let her keep what she wanted just because she wanted it.  We were able to subtly remove the gift bags before we got to check out, and she apparently forgot about them.

The second leg of the journey was around the corner to Randall's.  There all we hd to do was pick up a prescription, so Chris just dropped me off and she drove around the parking lot with Cailyn.  It is always great to see her face when she first sees me.  She either lights up like somebody just turned on a floodlight at midnight, or she buries her face like she's hiding in a hole and can't be seen.  When I got back to the car I saw one of the light-up faces.  She was grinning and waving and bouncing all over her car seat.  Wow.  It's great to be loved like that.  Oh, and Cailyn was happy to see me, too.  Just kidding, Chris.

Proverbs 27:21 says, "The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but man is tested by the praise he receives."

Father, please lift me from the fog I've been in for the last few days.  Amen.
