May 14 – “The Vaughan event of the generation”

I watched a football game yesterday.  No, it wasn’t one of those USFL things on TV.  Nothing on TV at all.  I went in the front yard, leaned against the tail of the truck, and watched Josh and Luke take on Caleb and Zak in a scrimmage of sorts.  Each team had four downs to score.  Then possession passed to the opponents.  It was a calm and efficient way to play the game, I thought.  I’m not sure they even kept any kind of score.  But they all seemed to have fun.  I did get involved once at the end.  Zak was covering Luke, not exactly a fair match-up.  So as they passed my location near the truck, I simply assisted Luke a bit by slightly interfering with Zak’s forward progress.  Well … OK.  I grabbed Zak and held on so Luke could make the catch and score a touchdown.  And that just seemed like a good place to pause the game.

Kel and Christina and that whole set of cousins came over around ten or so to hang out.  We all had Little Caesar’s pizza and salad for lunch.  Well, I guess to be more accurate, that should read “and/or salad.”  Not every plate was adorned with the festive greenery available.  They all left around 2:30.  We had a big night to get ready for.

Jachin’s graduation from high school was the Vaughan event of the generation.  At least for three more years.  It was held at University Baptist Church in Clear Lake in conjunction with the homeschool co-op they have been affiliated with for a year or so.  Several of Jachin’s baseball team members were graduating as well.  Nathan and April and Cailyn came, so all of our youngsters were in attendance for the groundbreaking event – first grandchild to graduate.  You know what that means, don’t you?  Their parents are getting old.  That’s it.  They’ll be catching up with us before they know it.  We made an unexpected discovery at the ceremony.  One of Jachin’s friends is the grandson of the lady who taught all three of our boys how to swim (Sybil Rampy, a.k.a. Swim with Syb in Arlington, Texas).  Small world.

Oh, by the way, we listened to the Astros first inning in the car.  That’s about all we had to hear.  Altuve hit a homer on the first pitch.  Brantley hit a double on the third.  Bregman waded in with another double on the fourth or fifth.  Next up Yordan hit a home run.  By the time the dust had settled, the Astros were ahead 5-0, and the Nationals hadn’t even batted yet.  Final score – 6-1.  Eleven in a row.  Go Astros!

Nahum 1:7 says, “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble.  He cares for those who trust in him.”

Father, please walk with Jachin and the other graduates as they anticipate and take action on the next steps in their lives.  Amen.
