October 12 – “Robot Grandma”

Cailyn arrived right at 6 a.m. yesterday morning. Her Mom is in Corpus Christi caring for her grandmother after hip replacement surgery (Grandma, by the way, is doing well.  She is already home from the hospital and working on walking.  April gets to be the merciless taskmaster for a few more days).  Her Dad was on shift at the fire department, so he dropped her off on his way in.  Before we left for school, Cailyn kept asking question after question about her Grandma’s surgery, so I pulled it up online.  The first thing to come up was an article explaining it.  Now what she wanted.  Oh, no.  She wanted to see what it looked like.  “Just switch to images, DadDad,” I was informed by Little Miss Technology.  First things that came up were  before and after x-rays.  Not what she had expected to see.  “Those are gross, DadDad.”  We finally managed to find some images that were drawings.  She was really fascinated by the whole process.  We even prayed for Grandma at supper.  Cailyn is quite proud to have a “Robot Grandma.”

She wore her brand new cowgirl boots from Aunt Dawn to school.  She was proud of them, too.  We got her to school on time, but along the way I heard some stories about a certain kid named Matthew of whom she spoke thusly: “Apparently he likes me.  He always wants to have my shoes.  He’ll want these.  I know he will.”  Hmm.  Wonder if I should tell her Daddy about that one …

Later in the day we went over to Academy because I had a $10 gift certificate from Coastal Conservation Association.  We looked at horseshoes (decided that since we only need the stakes, maybe we could pick some up from Home Depot), popup tents (We live on a barrier island.  One could always find use for a popup tent.  Apparently there is quite a demand for the product, but they were quite expensive), shirts (That would be long sleeved t-shirts, the acceptable wear for Galveston for most of our winter months), and I even glanced at fishing stuff )How could I not?  That’s kind of like a pilgrimage).  We finally settled on a new folding chair for our jaunts to grandchildren baseball and softball and football games.  It was on sale for $9.99.  Total came to $10.89.  I gave her the coupon and was reaching for another dollar to make up the difference when she handed me the receipt and said “Thank you.”  Somehow the gift certificate magically covered the tax as well.  Why, thank you, Academy … and CCA.

2 Corinthians 10:17-18 says, “But, ‘Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.’  For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.”

Father, thank you for fun surprises like gift certificates that cover the tax as well.  Help Cailyn’s Grandma recover quickly from her surgery and get back on her feet real soon.  Amen.
