August 8 - “Loooong walk”

Wow. Talk about a full day. And pretty much all of it was on foot. 16,700+steps, to be specific. Day one of DC is on the books.

We found our parking garage after only a missed turn or two. We were late for our specified check-in time for a Capitol Building tour, but it didn’t matter. We got right in and made the rounds with our guide. The experience felt eerily familiar. We have been to the Texas capitol, after all. And, yes. Texas is taller.

We had some lunch there in the capitol dining room. Pretty good bacon cheeseburger for me. Chris had a massive crab cake.

We started the afternoon across the street (sort of) at the Supreme Court building. A lot of it was closed to the public for yearly maintenance, so it didn’t take all that long to see what we could. We did go to the gift shop. That’s where I saw the first souvenir I really wanted. It was a Ruth Bader Ginsberg doll. Sadly, Chris nixed that purchase. Gotta admit though, it was - umm - scary.

From there we walked over to the National Archives. That was pretty interesting. Ezra in particular was excited to see the original Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. There were lots of other key early documents on display as well. Glad we went. Oh, and the gift shop there had my second souvenir choice - an Eleanor Roosevelt doll. Chris said “No way.”  Why? Well, it admittedly fell into the same “Incredibly Frightening” category as the Ruth doll. I almost managed to get my third choice - finger puppets of some of the past presidents and First Ladies. But … nope. Sigh.

By this time we were tired and hungry, but to head back to the house would have meant fighting some serious traffic. So we ignored our “tired” and took another loooong walk. This one took us past our parking garage by several blocks. There was light at the end of that rainbow, however. We had dinner at the apparently world-famous District Tacos. That was some good quesadillas I had. Everybody seemed to enjoy the food.

Finally, we made our way back to the cars. It sure felt good to just stop walking. I ended up with those almost 17,000 steps. Ouch. But … we’re getting ready to do it again today. Woohoo!

Romans‬ ‭5‬:‭8‬ says, But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!

Father, bless that security guard who commented on my Jesus shirt. Use your word to draw him to you. Amen.
