August 17 - “Happy Birthday, Chris!”

Yep. Today is Chris’ birthday. Woohoo! She made it one more year. Congrats.

Our hotel happened to be within 20 minutes of our first destination - Jamestown. Great coincidence.  We went to Jamestown many years ago, back in the pre-National Park era, in the tiny little tots era, in that long ago time when Kel was four and Josh was 6 months (I’m sure he remembers a lot) and Nathan was but a twinkle in my eye. So a return trip was certainly in order.

We walked the grounds, which, sadly, were missing the archaeological sites. Oh, they were there, all right, but they were all covered up for the weekend. Apparently archaeologists like days off. It was still plenty interesting, though. About a 2 mile hike of interesting.

Right down the street from ye olde historyce citi was the Jamestown glassblowing house. That was the one thing Chris wanted to see again this trip. And the glass blower didn’t disappoint. We watched her make a few bottles while she chatted with Chris. That led, of course, to a special purchase in the gift shop - one of the jars she had just made.

From there we headed over to Yorktown. We started that excursion by watching the movie they invariably include. It gave us the broad overview of the siege and battles.

Then we joined a group out back of the center for a once monthly reenactment. Six volunteers dressed in full British uniforms loaded and actually shot off one of the artillery canons (with blanks, of course). It was …LOUD.

The coolest part, though, was that the firing was being filmed (well, by me, but I was not alone). Seems a documentary for BBC was being filmed to tell the British side of the battle. Fun to watch. But then we got to get up close and personal with each of the different sized canons. The Brit’s hung out to answer questions as well (the fake Brit’s, not the real ones. The BBC crew grabbed their camera and hit the road).

Next we got a map and followed it on a driving tour of the battlegrounds. There was nothing to look at related to the battle, but it was a really fun drive through a lot of deep woods. Oh, and Chris had a real up close and personal interaction with … a wild deer.  A six or eight point buck was chilling at one of the stops. He never ran away at our car’s approach. In fact, he came close to us. Chris could have reached out and petted him. Gotta love those critters.

Next we headed home, but since we hadn’t eaten much all day (cheese and peanut butter crackers), we decided to search out a restaurant. And much to our surprise, there was an old faithful Cracker Barrel just a couple of blocks from the hotel. Couldn’t pass that up. Chris had the roast beef. I had meatloaf. Good stuff.

‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭1‬:‭3‬ says, His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.

Father, thanks for the new experiences today. Thanks for Cailyn’s recovery. And thanks for helping Kel and his crew get back to Texas safely. Amen.
