August 16 - “National Park Knuckleheads”

We eased out of our hotel around 9:30. We drove by The Tabernacle, the church where our friend Danny Campbell used to pastor. Just wanted to see it before we shot up to their house to see him and Elizabeth.

And it was great to catch up with them. We spent a few hours eating some great food and chatting with great friends.

We got on the road to our first National Park of this leg, Petersburg National Battlefield just outside of Richmond. On the fly we decided to book two nights stay at Williamsburg, so we could take our time at Jamestown and Williamsburg and Yorktown. And there was also a fort further south in Hampton that is a national monument. Looks like these next two days could be busy ones.

Petersburg was a pretty quick stop. Chris got the stamps from the visitors center. Then we walked over to the battery where the Union forces first started besieging Petersburg. Then we found a side trail into the woods. There were no markings anywhere around, so we did what any self-respecting National Park Knuckleheads would do … we walked it. It eventually led us to the railroad tracks - the very ones the Union troops were trying to take to make the Confederate supply chain dry up. Hike. Check.

From there we made a right turn and headed into Williamsburg. We ended up on a scenic drive that took us past President John Tyler’s home. Really pretty. Reminded us of Maine. Hmm. Sounds weird to be able to say that. Guess I’m showing off some, huh?

Luke‬ ‭1‬:‭49‬ says, because the Mighty One has done great things for me, and His name is holy.

Father, bless Danny and Elizabeth for their expression of hospitality to us. You made some good folks there. Amen.
