Yesterday was a different kind of tough day. We went back into town, but we didn’t stay there.
First we stumbled upon the Eisenhower Memorial when Ezra noticed the National Park symbol on a door. We stopped to investigate, and realized we were walking right past a massive art structure. It was two or three stories tall, so it blended into the huge buildings around it. The tribute was an artist’s etching of the outline of the cliffs that had to be overcome for the DDay invasion to be successful. Eisenhower was the top general in charge at the time. The kids (including that one named Chris) all got their stickers and we moved on to the other downtown stop.
Out of all the possibilities they chose the Smithsonian Air and Space museum to browse in. That’s the place that has the original Wright Brothers plane. But that wasn’t all. There were airplanes and spacecraft of all kinds, including the USS ENTERPRISE and a full-sized X Wing fighter. And right in the middle of our exploration … TIME OUT! Chris had one of her spells. But do not fear. We just slowly slid down the wall together to rest on the floor like any good, self-respecting old people to wait for it to pass.
We grabbed some lunch in the cafeteria there. Not at all impressed. Oh , the food we ordered was passable enough, but it took too long and was way overpriced. Maybe two stars here.
The highlight of the day, of course, was the trip into Baltimore. We had tickets to the Orioles vs. Athletics. And as a bonus … it was bobblehead night for the guy they inducted into their team hall of fame, Adam Jones. Honestly, I don’t even remember the guy, so he must have been in an era after mine. And face it. The Orioles haven’t been great since Brooks Robinson and Luis Aparicio.
We got there early to make sure we got a bobble head. Mission accomplished. Next order of business (after finding our seats) was the requisite stadium crawl. Well, crawl around until we find a place to eat. Didn’t want to lose Chris again.
After walking all around we settled on a particular hot dog vendor. Chris ordered a chili cheese dog. But I was feeling a might adventurous. I went with the crab Mac and cheese dog. I know. Strange combination. But it was good. Really good. I could have eaten the crab for another meal or two.
The game was rather, well, boring. Neither team has a very good record. No real superstar on either squad, either. Just baseball. And that’s a good thing. Oh. Did I mention that the bad guys won this one 11-3. That would be - in this case - Oakland, because they are in the same division as the Astros, so any loss by a division foe is a good thing, especially since the Astros lost to the Yankees.
Proverbs 31:30 says, Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised.
Father, thank for safety on the trip to Baltimore and back. These streets are just weird, even with gps. Amen.
