August 7 - “First Last Leg”

The kids were in desperate need of a calming, wonderful voice to gently awaken them yesterday. Their mother was busy in the kitchen and Nana was packing. No one was left. What a sad moment.

But wait! Suddenly Mom remembered. DadDad was here. And available. And renowned not only for his lyrical singing voice, but also for the sweet and gentle style he croons with. Perfect! Just what a busy mom needs to get children out of bed and to the breakfast table.

Humbly, I began. Within seconds the melodious sounds of the old country favorite, “I’m a nut” emanated from my lips. And the results were, for some, instantaneous. For others, not so much. But all eventually succumbed to the enticing, Siren-like melody. Now … Git up! Git outa da bay-ud!

We made our most unusual Joyride run. We stopped at a Kroger in Bristol, an unusual town that just happens to sprawl across the border between Tennessee and Virginia. The Kroger was literally on the state line. So we entered the Joyride run in Virginia, grabbed a bag of gummy worms, and took another picture in the back corner of the store … Tennessee!

A little further up the road we stopped for lunch. In all our travels  on the East coast, we have seen this place everywhere. But we have never stopped. Just made fun of it by singing the song. Well, this time we went in. You know … I never knew that song was about a chicken. Mr. Bojangles.  Hmm.

By the way, it was quite interesting traveling in these mountains. A steady drizzle was our companion most of the afternoon. Chris drove masterfully, though.

We did see a Big ol’ Blowup Buc-ee in front of an actual Buc-ees somewhere in rural Virginia. We didn’t stop, but it made me feel at home.

We were blessed with a major detour off of the interstate. Some kind of wreck or something. It took us through beautiful downtown Strasburg, Virginny. Claim to fame? A giant goat painted on a building.

And shortly after leaving Strasburg, we located a Walmart in the nearby metropolis of Winchester (not on our map). We hit the bathrooms and grabbed some stuff for supper. And finally we entered the final hour and 20 minute first final leg of our journey.

Meanwhile, we got word that Jachin had cleared airport security in advance of his flight to D.C. to meet up with us. That meant a late-night excursion to the D.C. airport for Kel and Josiah.

John‬ ‭3‬:‭17‬ says, For God did not send His Son into the world that He might condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.

Father, thanks for getting us to D.C.  Please now keep us safe while we explore. Amen.
