August 15 - “Happy birthday to me”

Well, here’s how I celebrated my birthday yesterday. We hiked up Liberty Mountain. Well, to be honest, Chris and I did the proverbial wimp hike. “Only” a total of about 2.5 miles from the parking lot up the hill and back. The rest of the crew took off on one of the tortuous trails. No way for Chris, though. Not after the scary experience the other day. But we made it to the giant Liberty University logo made from painted rocks way up on the mountain.

I did get a few extra birthday gifts along with the hike. I was serenaded with the Happy Birthday song by Noa and Christina. Melodious and sweet.

I had a text from a certain oldest granddaughter expressing her best wishes and reminding me who is my favorite grandchild.

I received a video all the way from Waco with Zak, Lindsay, Caleb, Luke and AnnaGrace all lined up in height order wishing me a great day.

I also got a hand held fan from Chris. It’s a lot like the one Christi let me use at Dollywood. Except this one has seven levels of air blowing speed. It came in very handy on the hike. Mainly for her!

Back to events …

Next we picked up Micah after class and went to Slim Chickens for our farewell lunch. I had chicken nuggets. Chris had a grilled chicken wrap. And, they messed up her order, so we ended up with a whole chicken wrap with fried chicken in it to take home, because they didn’t want to deal with it.

Next we drove over to the campus to drop Micah off for class. The place was a madhouse!  New students were arriving and cars were blocking everything. We finally told Kel to just stop long enough for us to hug Micah, and we would get out of there. That worked great for us. Minimal watery eyes. Must have been allergies. We left them somewhere in the sea of automobiles and freshmen.

Whew! I guess this begins phase two of our part of this journey. We headed east out of town for just about 30 minutes and found ourselves in the town of Appomattox Court House. Yep. That’s the name of the town where Lee officially surrendered to Grant. It didn’t happen in the actual court house, though. They appropriated the house of some poor family living there. The signing happened in their parlor. The family left town shortly after. Headed back home to … Manassas. For all you Civil War history buffs … Ouch.

From there we turned south. We found a rather obscure little spot in red about an hour away that said National Monument. Why not? Come to find out, it was the home of Patrick Henry. We had to switch gears on our war focus and revert to the Revolutionary War.

The house was in the middle of … well, Nowheresville, Virginia. It was kind of a gem, though. The guy acting as docent turned out to be the great, great, great, great, great grandson of Patrick Henry. His name was Patrick Henry Something. Even gave us his autograph. And the hike wasn’t too tough, so there’s that.

By the time we finished up with Pat and his grandadX5’s house, it was getting a little late. The nearest big town was Danville, so we headed there. Actually, we have some friends who live there. The plan is to meet up with them for brunch today. See you soon, Danny and Elizabeth.

Acts‬ ‭20‬:‭35‬ says, In every way I’ve shown you that by laboring like this, it is necessary to help the weak and to keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus, for He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

‭‭

Father, please bless all those people who wished me a happy birthday. Especially the grandkid ones - from a song and a hug to a very sweet text to the Vaughan Trapp Family knock-off. I loved them all. Amen.
