April 9 - “Eclipse”

We had a rather harsh wake-up call. The phone rang at 6 a.m.  I had ordered some coffee to arrive between 6:30 and 7. They wanted to know if they could come early. Like immediately. Well, I had to get up to answer the phone anyway, so I said bring it on. As it turned out, it was a good thing. We were able to watch a beautiful sunrise over the Gulf. And we were really thankful to see it, because we didn’t expect to encounter any of the eclipse out here.

Just after breakfast we found out on Facebook that there was another Galveston friend on the ship. That made three that we knew about. I was sure we’d run into them eventually. How hard can it be? There are only 8000 or so people floating around out here.

I experienced my first great disappointment of the cruise yesterday. Chris refused to let me do the zip line. She pulled the whole “do whatever your wife says” card. And the worst part of it? She never said a word. Just … that look. When you know … you know. Didn’t stop her, though. She strapped up and took the leap. What a woman!

After lunch we grabbed a spot on deck and used the special sunglasses Larry and Diane brought to stare at the sun a while. The captain had made an announcement at lunch that we would be able to see a partial eclipse. He was right. The sky was crystal clear. The eclipse went off as planned. Where we were was a partial, and very clear. The Vaughan group chat started posting pictures, and they were amazing. Especially the ones from Waco from the center of the path. History.

Dinner last night was elite as usual. I had calamari, beef tenderloin, and almond cream puffs. Chris had butternut squash soup, salmon, and warm apple crisp with ice cream. And we enjoyed getting to know some new folks at our table from Grand Prairie, Texas.

Speaking of people … earlier in the cruise on a Facebook post, I told Charlette’s husband Jim that I would probably run across her in spite of the 7,999 other people onboard. Well … told ya, Jim. And while we were talking to her, Lynn and Stephanie from Seaside just happened to walk up. Talk about a real bonus. Great to see you guys.

After dinner we went to the floating theater to see their production of Grease. I was hoping for an upgraded sighting of some version of Olivia Newton-John. The singing quality was certainly there, but come on … it’s hard to replicate Olivia.

Quick pain update. That toilet emergency before we left home really did get the better of me. Combined with the super soft pillows here, the crick in my neck became a real pain. Oh, and the thumb arthritis didn’t help any. OK. Update done. On to brighter fields. Like … Honduras fields … fields that harbor baby sloths just aching to be held.

‭‭1 Chronicles‬ ‭29‬:‭11‬ ‭ says, Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.

Father, would you please grant that little baby who is staying next door to us a full night’s sleep? OK. I know that’s actually a selfish prayer, because we could sure some sleep, too. Amen.
