April 12 - “Costa Nope-a”

We got up pretty early yesterday for our planned excursion into Costa Maya, Mexico. We grabbed a quick breakfast and headed to our gathering station. Just as we eased into our seats, the bells came over the loudspeakers. A message from the captain. Uh oh.

And the message was, in essence, “Hope you didn’t really want to go to Costa Maya today. The massive storms that hit the area last night severely damaged the pier. I cannot safely dock the ship. So … enjoy another thrilling day at sea.”

We managed to get some pictures of the shoreline and pier from our balcony. Chris saw two lighthouses. We could see the restored Mayan temple. We noticed a sailboat that had been washed ashore. And we saw the dock. Kind of waved at it as we floated by.

Speaking of waves … we used the extra time on the ship to go hang out on the pool deck. And yes, that means we actually got into the pool. We started out by joining Larry and Diane in one of the lesser-used hot tubs. When we were good and warm, we switched to the pool with the fewest people in it. Well, Larry and I did anyway. Diane said she had to cool down first. Chris was plain old averse to the whole “freezing cold water” experience. She did come around to dipping her feet in, though. We both enjoyed watching the youngsters paddle around.

After a quick lunch we retired to our stateroom. No other reason than to take a much needed nap. Diane was feeling a little queasy, so we took her some Dramamine.

She seemed to be feeling much better when we all met for dinner. Couldn’t miss our specialty dining voucher night at Chop’s Grill. It was a very high end steak house. I had the fillet. Chris had salmon. Gooood. Their in house photographer snapped a few really good pics of us. We used some of our on board credit to get three of them. One was a sweet one. One was Chris’ choice. And then there was the one I chose. The photographer completely twisted my arm to choose that one - “Yes. Yes. You should choose the funny one.”  How could I say no?

After dinner we had time to change clothes before our night time show. This one was supposed to be an outdoor water extravaganza with high diving and lights and, well, water, showcasing some impressive acrobatic skills. Welll … the weather (it was raining when we arrived) and waves rocking the boat caused them to have to pare an hour and a half show down to 29 minutes. The highlights were the two high wire acrobats. The rest of the show was highly … disappointing. It amounted to a stomp show with occasional somersaults or no-handed cartwheels. Oh and there was one back flip. I am certain that Micah and his karate show team would have been much more spectacular. I guess the weather really did mess them up. I hope that was it.

Malachi‬ ‭4‬:‭6‬ says, And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.

Father, thanks for you for the chance to experience things like that fine dining - things we’ll never get to do at home. Amen.
