Pretty
exciting news around the Galveston County area in the paper this morning. Front page, in fact. Seems the Major League Quidditch
championships are going to be held in League City in August. Should be quite the boost for the city’s
economy. Hotels. Restaurants.
Even Cabella’s was mentioned, but word has it they might be a secret
sponsor of one of the teams. Details on
sponsors have not been released as yet, but someone has to provide all those
brooms and balls.
And
I’m sure some of those folks will want to catch some time at the beach as
well. Come on, it will be August in
South Texas. Surely they will want to
leave the country for a while and cross over the Causeway onto our little
island off the coast. I’ll have to keep
my eyes open for some of the great ones: Bonsai Bofferman (nicknamed for the
tree, not the crazed war cry. Hey,
everybody has to have a hobby, right?).
Nickel McNickelson (His real name is Nicolas, but he included in his
last contract that he would repay the team a “nickel” for every goal scored
against him. By “nickel” he means $500,
of course). And that all-time fan
favorite, Barry “Broom Boom” Briedmeister, all the way from Germany. He delights fans – and annoys opponents - wherever he goes with that tiny little radio
speaker attached to his broom. No one
knows when he will reach down and hit that loud bass knob, startling opponents
just as they attempt a shot on goal.
I
heard that the league has traveled into Australia and Africa this past season
to find new snitch hosts. That’s the
ones on the field with the snitch ball tied to their waist. They run all over the place trying to avoid
capture, since to own the snitch is to win the game. One quidditch match can be so intense (and
sometimes so long) that as many as seven snitch hosts can tag team their way
into the action.
Quidditch. It is a truly exciting, up and coming
sport. With its popularity on the rise
in virtually every country in the world, I’m pretty sure it is destined to achieve
coveted Olympic status in the very near future.
Kudos to League City for garnering the championship match this
year. And special acknowledgment to the
Galveston Daily News for releasing the big news on such an auspiciously special
day. Say it with me … “Quick! Quick!
Quidditch!”
Revelation
21:7 says, “He who overcomes will inherit
all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.”
Father,
thank you for fun. Great invention. Amen.
