May 8 – “God stories and giggly girls”

I went to the monthly pastor's breakfast yesterday with the guy from church who has been serving Seaside as a volunteer director of education ministries.  He spends a lot of time at the school and he has done a lot of physical labor stuff on the building trying to get the underside insulated.  I'm hoping one of the teams that come to do ministry in Galveston this summer can help finish that project out.  Dave told me a God-story last night.  Seems that he ran into a family who asked about possible scholarship help for enrolling their student in Seaside Christian Academy.  Sadly, at the time they asked no such program existed.  Later that afternoon, however, the secretary informed him that she had just received a call from someone asking if it was possible to donate some money to a scholarship fund.  Hmm.  I would say that is God at work.

The breakfast was kind of a lighthearted gathering of the area pastors to promote fellowship among the guys.  I've been to a few of them.  I enjoy hearing the ones talk about their various escapades on one mission field after another.  This time the stories from South of the border were rampant.  Central America and Brazil to be specific.  I also verified something I had heard a while back.  The director of missions in Palo Pinto county is now the guy who came to Galveston after Hurricane Ike with his family and did a lot of work on our house.  We nicknamed him Tarzan, because he tied himself off and climbed into the trees around the house to cut back branches before they could fall onto the house.  His wife held the tie-off rope.  Meanwhile even his littlest kids had brooms and were sweeping the deck and patio.  A large group from that area is scheduled to stay at Seaside this summer, so I'm hoping we get to see him again.

Jachin's baseball team had another game last night.  They have picked up two new kids.  It's a brother and sister combination, neither of whom has ever played before.  I loved watching them.  Every time they came to bat, with the spotlight on just them, they just beamed.  Someone would cheer them from the stands, and they would turn around to acknowledge the accolade, even if the pitch was about to fly.  The little girl was very giggly and reminded me of Cailyn, so that of course endeared her to me.  They didn't get a hit, but the thing that struck me most was the sheer joy at being there.  I hope they stick it out until their skills catch up and they can experience some success.

1 John 2:9-11 says, "Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him."

Father, it was great to be reminded that you rule from the rousing stories of the foreign mission field to the exuberant excitement of a giggly girl.  Amen.
