April 17 – “Visit to the court house”

We began our journey through the court system in Bay City yesterday.  Actually Chris has been there twice before.  The first time was the week before we were to get married.  She returned home from college to prepare for the big day when she realized that one of the letters sent to her home address was to inform her that she had been called for jury duty.  She had to appear before the judge in tears and request to be released from that civic responsibility.  She was released.  Perhaps because of her feminine wiles.  Perhaps because the judge was just a nice guy.  Perhaps because technically her place of residence was actually now in Houston.  Whichever reason … I'm glad she made it to the wedding.

The second time she went was related to filing her Mom's will for probate.  She attended with her Dad.  That was a year and a half ago.  Yesterday we picked up where that left off.  She and her brother were named executors of her Mom's estate, since her Dad is now dead and execution of the will was never completed.  Up front it sounded like things might actually finally get done and she could reach closure on that whole chapter of her life.  She has to write some letters requesting information and introducing herself as the new executor.  And she has to get with her half-brother to complete the dispersal of specific items mentioned in the will.  Therein lies the difficulty.  Her Dad had challenged the will before he died, saying some of the things mentioned were not really her Mom's to distribute.  Her half-brother has apparently taken up that mantle.  Sadly, that may not have been Chris' last visit to the Bay City court house.

It was certainly not her last visit to Bay City.  She is going back today to help out her other Dad – the one who adopted her.  He can no longer drive and the lady he lives with has to have some kind of heart procedure this morning.  She has children, but they all live in California.  She has never asked for help before, and in fact she found a way to get to the hospital, but she needs a ride home.  They aren't involved with any church, so I suggested to Chris that we could call one of them and ask for help.  We even have a contact.  The pastor of the Vineyard Church here knows the pastor of the Vineyard Church there.  Maybe next time.    So Chris being Chris … Guess Cailyn and Mom and I will find something to do today.

1 Peter 3:18 says, "For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God."

Father, please bring a supernatural conclusion to this whole legal thing so Chris can rest.  Amen.
