December 14 – “some good, old-fashioned fun”

How often can you say that you had some good, old-fashioned fun at church?  I think maybe yesterday can fall into that category.  It was the Third Sunday in Advent, so the emphasis was on joy.  We heard from eth Word all the way from Nehemiah to Philippians about joy.  There was a clip from the movie Elf where Buddy expresses his incredible joy when he hears Santa is coming.  We heard and watched a music video of eth song “Don’t Worry.  Be Happy.”  We even ended with a room full of bubbles as 20 or 30 bottles were passed around while we sang Joy to the World.

And the best part of it all?  Along with our amazing Seasiders, we had a retired professor of nursing there who said she was back in church for the first time in a very long time.  She loved the experience.  And then after worship I had the privilege of talking with a young man about salvation and subsequently baptism.  He was excited about the baptism, but – in his words – “Not in December.”  Looks like we have another candidate for our Easter sunrise service on the beach.

Psalms 8:3-4 says, “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?”

Father, thank you for the joy you give us in your nature, your people and especially in you.  Amen.
