I’ve
been trying to sequester myself for the last few days. I woke up Sunday with
what appeared to be the beginnings of a summer cold. It was. For me that means not much sleep at night and
lots of upper respiratory issues during the day as well. I’m following the orders of my resident
nurse, which are the usual ones: drink plenty of fluids, rest, don’t do
anything fun, etc., etc., etc.
We
did have some excitement last night, though.
Nathan and April and Cailyn came over and fixed us a Mother’s Day supper
of baked potatoes with all the stuffings, including some barbeque brisket. He had to work on Mother’s Day, so they just
bumped it ahead 24 hours or so. Typical
fire fighter family adjustment. That was
some good food, though. Even better
company.
After
supper we all went over to the softball fields for the closing ceremonies of
the regular season. They have been
postponed twice already, so they were anxious to get them in. all the girls lined up by teams on the outfield
grass. Someone prayed a really nice
prayer and then sang the National Anthem while one of the players held an
American flag on the pitcher’s mound. He
did a good job, too. Hit all the right
notes. It was pretty hard to sing along
with him, though. He had his own take on
how long to hold certain notes and how much of that trilly-voice thing to put
into it. Not that I was doing any
singing …
They
introduced the board of directors of the Galveston Lassie League, and then each
team was called to home plate, where each coach presented individual trophies
to every girl. It went surprisingly
fast. One would think they have done
this a few times before. The other
impressive thing about this awards ceremony?
When it was over, they let it be over.
They didn’t try to make up stuff to get it to last longer. The whole thing took fifteen or twenty
minutes and we were on our way back to the house. Well, that was after some pictures of Cailyn with
her trophy and a few with friends, of course.
All in all, nice job, Lassie League.
Now back to all-stars. Next
tournament is Memorial Day weekend.
Practice tomorrow. Gotta love
this game …

away, but my words will never pass away.”
Father,
help our little guys continue to enjoy the sports and activities they choose to
participate in. It’s just not worth it
if they aren’t having fun. Amen.
