April 4 – “A 55 inch-er”

Now that I have your attention, no, sadly, I’m not talking about the measurements of the latest fish I pulled from the depths of the ocean.  I feel pretty gloomy about not having been wade-fishing already.  Especially since we just picked up two more baptisms for the sunrise service in the morning.  I always like to reassure them that “the water will be fine.  I just went fishing the other day …”  Now we’ll all just have to take the word of the all-seeing Weather Bug app.  I read in the paper that the water temperature is well into the 70’s now, but of course a cool front blew in this morning.  Supposed to have weather in the high 60’s all week.  It will be beautiful.  Just cold coming out of the water.  Sigh.  That’s what beach towels are for, right?

Nathan and I started our day out on Friday by helping a lady from our water therapy class.  We changed out her TV from a 42 inch to a 55 inch in her bedroom.  The guy at Best Buy tried to talk her into a 60 inch but she said she didn’t need to be extravagant.  The thing almost covered her whole wall as it was.  She should be able to see it from her bed just fine, though, and that was her plan all along.  She gave us a synopsis of her life mixed in with her instructions and background information about the new TV – in her words, the “Smart TV.”  We weren’t sure if she was fishing for us to set it up for her or not.    Seems she started out as a nurse’s aide, went to school for her LVN, and didn’t stop.  She became an RN, then got a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, then a Masters in Nursing, then became a nurse practitioner, and even did some doctoral level work.  Very impressive lady.  I told Nathan to just leave her the instruction book.  She was probably smarter than both of us put together anyway, so she could figure out the setup.  He still gave her a gentle nudge in the right direction by telling her what to expect along the way.

It was really simple to install, especially with an experienced technician like Nathan along.  He hung a TV at their house when they moved in and had to figure it out then, so this time he knew what to expect at every turn.  Good thing, because his apprentice was totally clueless.  The lady was very appreciative.  Even offered us money, which we refused, of course.  The whole thing didn’t even take us an hour, and that’s including her life story rendition.  The refusal surprised her even more than how fast the whole operation went.  She stumbled for words and finally, as we got into the car, I heard her mutter, “Well, I’ll just pay it forward then.”  There you go.  Good idea.

Isaiah 1:16-17 says, “Stop doing wrong; learn to do right!  Seek justice, encourage the oppressed.  Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.”

Father, surround our friend with your protection.  Keep her safe as she maneuvers her way through life one day at a time.  Amen.
