September 11 – “Honoring Joe Yerkes”

We went to a funeral yesterday.  Actually, just the memorial service part of it.  We were honoring Joe Yerkes, a fine man who used to come to Seaside before he moved to live near his kids.

The one big thing I remember about Joe was his passionate love of baseball.  He always greeted me on Sunday mornings with a smile and a word about two things:

How the Astros were doing (even during the off-season)

How his grandson was doing as an up-and-coming baseball player.

It was great to see Shirley and give her a hug or two.  And their daughters were very appreciative that we made the trip to the services.  They appreciated the impact Seaside had on their parents’ lives.

We had a quick lunch at Olive Garden.  Used up some old gift cards we found.  They covered the whole meal.  Well, except the tip.  We had to cover that.  Pretty good meal.  And the kid gave us great service, even though I couldn’t hear a word he said through his mask.

Headed to Spring to watch Cailyn play some basketball.  See ya.

Matthew 5:4 says, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

Father, please be with Shirley and their family as they walk through the next few days.  Amen.
