June 20 – “Van tales”

I started pulling pictures for the anniversary slide show.  Didn’t take long to get well over a hundred.  And that was just for two or three years.  I haven’t even pulled out the older youth camp pictures yet.  This task is gonna take some fine tuning.  But not today.

We left yesterday at around 10:15 to go into Texas to pick up the van we rented for camp.  It was supposed to be ready at 11:00.  Yep.  You guessed it.  “You were supposed to receive a phone call.  It won’t be here until around 12:30.”  Of course.  We decided to make the most of the time at hand, so we backtracked to Luby’s for some lunch.  Not sure how much longer this one will be open, so we wanted to get it in while we can.  And Luby’s is in the same parking lot as Mardel’s, so we were able to pop in there and pick up some Bibles for our Seaside graduates.

And then it was back to the van place.  This time the van was ready.  Well, almost.  They were washing it.  We finished out the paperwork while they scrubbed.  They did tell us we would get a fifty dollar rebate for our trouble.  That was kind.  But the bigger surprise came when we were handed the final bill.  It was almost $200 less that they had originally quoted.  Thank you very much.  The van itself only has about 5,000 miles on it.  All kinds of bells and whistles, too.  Good thing Chris does most of the driving.  Now I can play with it and not have to worry about annoying little things like staying in my lane …

There was loads of traffic coming back into Galveston.  Saturday morning tourists arriving.  We took the resident shortcut.  That allowed us to stop at Randall’s for gas (they only put a quarter of a tank in those vans when you pick them up).  Chris ran inside to pick up a prescription and some milk.  Why milk when we are leaving town, you might ask?  Well, on the way to Houston she had a phone call from the camp nutritionist.  Between the two of them, they created a heart healthy menu right over the phone.  Only issue was, they done have access to 1% milk.  But they do have a refrigerator that is available, if Chris wanted to bring her own milk.  Amazing.  And the food options were pretty good ones.  I get to enjoy the kid-friendly menu.  Corn dogs.  Chicken nuggets.  Pizza …

Oh, and speaking of camp, internet and WiFi capabilities are somewhat limited there.  I may or may not be able to get a blog posted every day.  I will have a post for every day, though, so keep on trying.  And it will be in musical form as usual.  After all, “I’m a nut, I’m a nut, I’m a nut, I’m a nut, I’m a nut …”

Father, please be with us on the road today.  Help the kiddos have a great time.  Amen.
