Yesterday was once again “Head to Waco” Day. I was up kind of early, so I tried to get some work done on the church anniversary coming up. Gotta get some invitations out right away. I got the initial one done that will go out to former staff people. Addressed it to Josh and saved a stamp by packing it with us.
On
the way we made our requisite stop at Buc-ees for lunch and a bathroom
break. Chris had chicken salad. I had chopped beef. We topped it off with caramel popcorn. We were trying to cover the entire
barnyard. Chicken. Cows.
Corn. The three C’s of nutrition,
right?
We
made it safely and without incident until about three miles from their
house. An 19-wheeler tanker had run off
the side of the road. Didn’t look like
any other vehicles were involved, but an ambulance was leaving the scene
running hot. Lord, be with whoever was
in the back of the box. Once past the
slowdown, it was smooth sailing the rest of the way. As we pulled up there was a solicitor at the
door. Kind of threw Christi when she
answered that it wasn’t one of the expected grandparents. Her parents were due to arrive as well. Hey, a fifteenth birthday and a first dance recital
are big deals, I suppose.
I
joined forces with Josh to form a team for an afternoon game of balloon
volleyball. Padres versus Ninos. That would be Luke and Caleb. It was a tight, but I’m pretty sure we
won. Of course Caleb was convinced they
won. Well, why not? That way everyone is happy. You can get away with that when there is not
a single first-born involved in the game.
Bunch of middle-kids just want everybody to be happy. After the game Chris and I were invited into
AnnaGrace’s room to play dolls. I
know. That sounds a little frightening
even to just type it. But good ol’ Nani
knew what she was doing. That was kind
of beyond my areas of expertise.
Zak’s
party was at the church rec center. He
invited enough of his friends to play some basketball and dodgeball. Caleb and Luke jumped right in. And both of them scored and played a key role
in the basketball games. Luke even put
the finishing toss in on one of the dodgeball games. Those towering giants couldn’t stop him. At Zak’s request Christi made him a cookie
cake. We sang to him, as usual, but had
to speed up the lyrics when the candle got a tad out of control and the flames
rose higher and higher. He managed to
get the fire out without calling 911 though.
AnnaGrace challenged anyone who would listen to a series of races. Never just one, mind you. I think I ended up in eight or ten of
them. Chris even jumped in. even though
she was having a few heart flutters, or whatever you call them. All was well with her, though.
Today
we head to the dance recital. No idea what
to expect there. I haven’t been to one of
these since the Stone family performed many years ago. Here we go …

Corinthians 13:4 says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is
not proud.”
Father,
be with whoever was in that ambulance yesterday. And with the medics as well. Amen.
