September 12 – “Particularly Tenacious Defense”

How about another early morning Saturday mini-road trip?  We found out that Cailyn had a basketball game – two in fact – yesterday.  The only thing was … it was up almost to Spring.  That’s north of Houston.  Well, that wasn’t the “only thing,” I guess.  The first game started at 8 a.m.  So, working backwards, that meant leaving by 7 and getting up around 6.  Not that big a change in my personal schedule, but certainly a stretch for Chris.  She handled it like a champ, though, and we were off.

All went really smoothly until we approached Houston. Those TexDOT road signs were up and running, and they were warning of a wreck at Interstate 10 that was causing some slow-downs on I45.  We found out later that it was an overturned 18 wheeler.  Great.  Fortunately, we saw the notice in plenty of time to choose the scenic route around Houston.  We took 610 – the inner loop around the city.  We made the leisurely drive, wondering if we would make it in time for any of the first game.

I texted April to let her know we were coming.  She warned us about the traffic, but also said they were obviously going to start late.  Why?  Because they were still standing in front of the unopened gym at 7:45.  Helpful for us, but not so much for the players who needed to get warmed up.

We arrived in time to see most of the first game and all of the second.  The opposition was victorious on both counts, but our girls did a great job.  Especially in the second game.  I think the final score was 22-20.  Real nail-biter.  We played some particularly tenacious defense.  I like saying that[KV1]  – “particularly tenacious defense.”  Sounds intimidating.

The road was still closed on the way home, but we managed to sneak through with only the usual downtown Houston slow-downs.  The rest of the afternoon was spent in various stages of packing for our next mini-road trip.  For this one, we leave right after church for San Antonio.  I’m attending a conference at the annual training seminar put on by the chaplaincy department of the Texas Baptist Convention.  Sounds important.  They even have what they are calling a “retreat” for the wives.  We’ll see …

Matthew 7:12 says, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

Father, please ride with us on this trip today.  Help us both to get something out of the conference experience as well.  Amen.
