We started our day off with a phone call
from our son Josh. He’s the Waco
connection. He was on his way to work on
his day off. Honestly, that doesn’t
sound so unusual. He is a pastor, after
all, and we really have no days off, as far as being “on call” is
concerned. But this one was special – a
phone call he had to respond to in person.
The workers in their newly renovated child
care center, which is open during the week, arrived at work that morning to
find one of their windows broken. OK, so
vandalism happens, and is not a good thing, but also not that unusual a
thing. Why the extra concern? This particular window had a particular breakage
pattern. Ready for this one? It had … a bullet hole in it. As did a crib in line with the window. And a rocking chair, also in the line of
fire.
The child care workers were horrified and
terrified and devastated at the “what-if’s” of the whole situation. “What if it had happened during the
day?” “What if a worker had been in that
chair?” And the most horrifying of all …
“What if a baby had been in that crib?”
When Josh arrived he sent us some
pictures. They even found the spent
bullet. He instructed the workers to
clean up the glass, since they had children in that room, and to call the police. He reassured them the best he could, and
finally headed back home to continue his “day off.” Ah, a day in the life of a pastor. Ain’t this life grand?
Psalms 119:2 says, “Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their
heart.”
Father, keep those babies and workers safe,
and reassure their hearts of your protection.
And give Josh a few uninterrupted hours of “day off.” Amen.
