September 1 – “Two more projects”

We kissed August goodbye yesterday with a “just us hanging out” husband and wife day.  Every now and then we attempt that.  The only phone calls we take are the ones from our kids.  And we try to do something simple together.  So of course that included a trip to WalMart for groceries.  But first we took Mom to Libbie’s Place and continued on over to Home Depot.  Chris has had a vision for another project in the back yard.  Well, two visions, actually.  Two projects.  One involves setting up a trellis for a climbing rose bush we have.  It seems to be having some difficulty getting the hang of hooking onto the chain link fence.  I don’t see what the problem is.  Maybe it’s afraid of the wisteria.  That thing has filled in all over the place on the back fence.  But we got a trellis so now it will have its very own spot to crawl upward toward the sky.  Sounds so … so … inspiring.

The second project involves concrete.  Not a lot, mind you.  We have a little pathway by the gate going into the back yard.  It is paved with some kind of slate-looking rock held together by concrete.  We are going to attempt to level it a bit and then reset the loose pieces.  To do that we needed a bag of quick-setting concrete.  Did you know there are at least six different choices of quick-setting concrete?  We finally settled on my favorite.  The instructions described digging a hole, putting a post in, pouring in the dry concrete and then soaking it with water.  Finally you let it set for twenty minutes.  That’s exactly what we need.  We can put some of the dry stuff down, and place the slate wherever we want it.  Then all we have to do is turn on the water.  Oh, and keep the dogs in the house for twenty minutes.  Can’t have them getting stuck, although that would be a first if Fritz couldn’t move.

So the projects are all planned out.  All that remains is carrying them out.  Thus would be our plans for today.  Except … it’s raining right now.

Psalms 25:21 says, “May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope is in you.”

Father, thank you for the rain.  Amen.
