We took the kiddos fishing yesterday. Well, not all of them, but eight is
enough. Hey, that would make a good TV
sitcom title, wouldn’t it? See, I was specifically
invited the night before by the birthday boy Zak, so I had to be sociable. We ran into one problem that I figured would
trouble us. No bait shop had live
shrimp, so we ended up just getting a bag full of dead shrimp. We were fishing a canal in Jamaica Beach, so
we hoped the kids would catch something.
As it turned out, there were a few catches. Croakers and hardhead catfish. Oh, but Luke and Micah each caught one of
those nasty mudfish creatures. As ugly
as they are, Luke’s gave him the title of biggest catch of the day, though. It took some doing, but I also got Micah to
actually hold his slithery hunk of nastiness so I could take his picture. It was quite the ordeal. Oh, and one of the highlights of the day was the staged
Crab Wars spectacle. The kids encouraged a
face-off between two of the clawed creatures Micah caught on a line. Not sure which beast won, but the spectators sure
seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the exhibition
After fishing we stopped off by the beach
for an hour or so. We had to let them
say they had been. I told the ones in my
car that they could go into the water, but they couldn’t get their clothes
wet. You wouldn’t believe the myriad of
ways they were coming up with top circumvent such a ludicrous expectation. They finally chose the path of least resistance
… it’s easier to get forgiveness than permission. They dove in anyway. Actually, I was just kidding with them in the
first place. I knew Chris had a pile of
towels in the car she was driving. They
had a ball, and Micah even caught another little crab with the fish net.
Josh and Christi left around 2 p.m., but
they left behind two of their critters.
Zak and Caleb will ride home with us when we head to Waco for our Kids Camp
meeting this afternoon. Yep. Immediately after church we are taking off
and attempting to make a five o’clock counselors’ meeting. Here we go …
John 14:26 says, “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my
name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said
to you.”
Father, please give us a safe – and quick –
trip to Waco this afternoon. Amen.
