We
had a fairly pleasant Saturday yesterday.
Nothing pressing on our plates that just absolutely had to be done. So how did we fill in such a low-stress
period in our life? Well …
We
slept in a little bit. I know 7:15
doesn’t sound late to many people (read
here, “Chris”), but it sure is for me.
We
watched one of the Star Trek movies where Captain Kirk and the crew are a bunch
of youngsters, and where Lt. O’Hura gives Spock a big ol’ smack on the
lips. That would be a kiss, not a punch
in the mouth. It’s the pone where
Captain Pike dies in an attack on Star Fleet headquarters. Now we face a dilemma. See, we just watched an episode of the
original Star Trek on Netflix. In it
Captain Pike had somehow been severely injured and was left in a futuristic
wheelchair with only the ability to cause a light to flash once for yes and
twice for now. Spoiler alert. He eventually gets to live out his final days
on a planet where the inhabitants can grant him the illusion that all is well
with him. I suppose the actual course of
events was something along the lines of:
1)
The attack on Star Fleet
2)
Pike mistakenly declared dead
3)
Futuristic medicine takes over after Kirk leaves to get Pike’s attacker. His
body is repaired just enough to get him in the chair, and he is sent to the
rehab colony.
4) The
Enterprise picks him up and takes him to the alien planet where he lives
happily ever after.
Whew. Reconciling the universe is not an easy task.
We also
tried our hands at the Harry Potter universe.
We were going to watch the last two installments of the film
series. I managed to stay awake through
most of part one, but when I went to put on part two, it was not in the
case. The mystery was soon solved,
however. Chris remembered Zakary
watching it on his computer when they were here. I double-checked with Josh, and he confirmed
its location. Not a problem. Simply another reason to make a Waco journey
in our near future.
And we
had seen enough to get us in the mood for the birthday party we were heading
off to. Cory and Sara are both Harry
Potter fans, so our gift to them was a four-pack of butter beer, some gummy
slugs and a box of Bertie Botts’ Every Flavor Jelly Beans. Truly a delightful conglomeration of
treats. At the party we saw several of
our Seaside kids from camps past. Some of
them even challenged some neighborhood kids to a basketball game. I was pretty proud of the old geezers,
too. None of them broke any bones, and I
think they were even ahead in the last game when it started raining. The youngsters ran off the court
immediately. The old guys had a hard time
telling the difference between the sweat covering their bodies and the rain
falling from the sky. Sara and Cory are
also big Astros’ fans, so it was no problem for me to keep up with the game on
my phone app. And the Astros won,
too. Good food. Good friends.
Good games. Good day. Thanks for the invite, guys.
Hebrews
13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday
and today and forever.”
Father,
keep Cory and Sara safe when they are working, and help them to grow closer and
closer to you. Amen.
