Yard day. Mowed and upon Chris’ orders, mowed down the cute yellow weed flowers as well. I finished up the mowing and edging, and got started on spreading Weed n Feed. Then, rumbling down the street, IT came.
IT, in this case, was the dreaded … Code Enforcement Truck. Honestly, I’ve seen that particular personification of horror off and on for several weeks around here. Never paid it much attention. In fact, probably the only reason I paid it any attention at all was a post I had seen in our neighborhood online group. Something along the lines of:
“It would be nice to have neighbors who actually care about their yards (and the appearance of our neighborhood) and at LEAST mow and edge on a regular basis. Some of the yards are an embarrassment.”
Could this presence be in response to that expression of concern?
I watched as the truck stopped in front of a neighbor’s house. It was one of the two neighbors who let those cute little yellow weed flowers take over their yards every Spring. Really a pretty sight. The officer departed his evil steed and strolled up to the door. Yep. Citation. And he didn’t stop there. He jumped back into the truck and drove all the way … next door. Yep. Citation there, too. Imagine. Had Chris not given me go-ahead to take down the weed-flowers in our yard, we would definitely have been citation number three. Whew!
Oh, one other word of neighborhood news that does not have such a “happy” ending. That same first neighbor has been feeding a stray cat and her kittens on their front porch. Yesterday morning they were greeted with the aftermath of an unfortunate visit from a coyote. They found one dead kitten. The rest were gone, no doubt having satiated the appetite of one or more of our wandering coyotes. So sad for them. The cats and the neighbor, not the coyote.
At least the good guys won last night. Astros over Rangers 6-4.
Psalms 19:1 says, The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky was proclaims the work of His hands.
Father, thank you for the nice weather so we could get some yardwork done. Amen.
