April 13 - “Chankanaab”

We arrived in Cozumel around 6 a.m. After gathering on the shore, we met our tour guide Diego. He arranged transportation for us to our destination … Chankanaab, which translated means “Little Ocean,” according to Diego.

Chankanaab is essentially a big water park with perks. The perks include a sea lion show and the possibility of swimming with dolphins and feeding manatees. We never saw any manatees, but the dolphins were showing off the whole time we were there. And the two sea lions were quite entertaining as well.

An all you can eat buffet was included with our ticket, as well as all the drinks you wanted (We stuck to Sprite), as long as we ordered only from the very American-looking building (That would be the one with the free wi-fi). As far as the meal goes, the only thing anywhere close to Tex-Mex were the chimichangas. The nachos had no flavor at all. Neither did the refried beans. I really liked the Cole slaw, though. Very … American.

The wind was blowing really hard, and as a result a yellow warning flag was out for snorkelers. Larry had wanted to go, but he opted out since they were requiring a life jacket be worn. So no real diving.

Oh, and I forgot to mention another thing that reminded me of home … seaweed. And it stunk. Watch out, Galveston.  I’m sure it’s on its way.

After a quick ice cream cone back on the ship, we retired to our rooms to get cleaned up and relax a bit before dinner. It was Royal Night. Chef’s suggestion was lobster tail with baked Alaska for dessert. Oh yeah.

After dinner we quickly made our way to the theater for a musical production called Columbus. It was a comedy based on the alleged life of Christopher’s down on his luck distant cousin.

Speaking of down on his luck … they had some serious technical difficulties with the operation of the elaborate (and actually pretty amazing) set, a boat that encompassed nearly the whole stage. The crew handled it well, though, and the show went on. It was a lot of fun, too. Best show of the week by far.

After the show we made our way to the little coffee shop that has become our regular nightly hangout spot. From there we heard a compilation of music from the 50’s and 60’s. I did my best to dance from a seated position (Hey. It took us a long time to nab those seats.  Plus, they were heavy on the Twist genre. Thats the motion that still bothers my back). I did get a certain little cutie seated next to me to dance the last slow dance with me.

It was kind of funny that this one started at 9:30. Every other night had celebrated a different era and style of music, and every other night had begun at 11:00 or later. Guess they figured those of us who lived through 50’s and 60’s music are all oldies now ourselves. Got those early bedtimes, ya know?

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭10‬:‭31‬ ‭ says, So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Father, thank you for that sweet dance partner I had tonight. Amen.
