September 4 – “Windy”

We have been having some very strong winds out of the East and Northeast the last few days.  They are from that Tropical Storm that is stalled over near Louisiana.  We had a little bit of rain last night and it is pretty cloudy right now, but unless the storm actually comes this way I'm afraid the rain may be over for us.  I even hear we have a cold front coming this way.  Wow.  It's been a long time since we have heard the word "cold" come out of a weatherman's mouth around here.

We were able to go to the beach yesterday with the little guys.  Those incredible winds were wreaking havoc on just about anything that wasn't tied down.  I don't know how many times I chased a ball down the beach.  It was a great way to meet folks, though.  Someone stopped it for me virtually every single time.  We even stopped someone's sandal as it flew by, but no one ever came to claim it.

Jachin and Zakary and Micah and Caleb all loved the water.  Not so much Josiah.  We need to get more sand between that boy's toes.  One time Micah was standing on one of the boogie boards in about a half inch of water.  He called out, "Look guys.  I'm skimboarding."  Josh asked Cailyn if she wanted to use the boogie board.  She replied, "No.  I don't have my surfboard."  Sounded just like a smug islander talking to a mainlander tourist.  Ah, Galveston.  Josiah kept signing "dog" to Christina.  I heard her say, "Oh, you mean bird?" and she corrected him with the sign for bird.  He regarded her briefly, but no.  He was sure.  To her credit, though, Christina finally saw the big old dog walking nearby.  Oh, that dog.

Speaking of dogs, after everyone left, except Cailyn, we headed out to the church for the first Labor Day Jamboree.  We were supposed to have bouncy houses and games – a real carnival atmosphere for the kids.  But did I mention the winds?  It was way too windy to put up those oversized balloons.  We ended up eating a hot dog and hanging out inside and waiting for the singing to begin.  Four or five different groups from several local churches came and sang random songs from their repertoire.  That was also supposed to have been outdoors in the hope that it would draw curious folks on their way to and from the beach.  Turned out to be a chance for some Christians to get together and be exposed to praise styles from different places.  Maybe next year the weather will cooperate and both goals can be achieved.

Proverbs 25:12 says, "Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold
is a wise man's rebuke to a listening ear."

Father, help me to hear from you instead of my pride in rebuke situations.  Amen.
