May 18 - “I can hear you”

It was my doc day yesterday, so I thought I would keep things as simple as possible. I just signed up for a hearing aid check. They have been talking to each other at random times of the day and evening. Simple enough. She just turned that function off. Also the right side one has been fading away into No Help At All Land. That took a little more doing. She took it into another room to “vacuum it out.”  Well, OK. I guess that’s one thing I never tried at home. She also changed out the receiver. By the time she was finished the difference was night and day. So sorry if I haven’t been able to put your words together in my ears.

On the way home, we stopped at Randall’s for a prescription and then  it was over to Walmart. Chris wanted to try out some t-shirts they had on sale for five bucks. Good little outing for her. Of her course it made her want to mark in the yard that much more. Nope. Not yet.

We were blessed again last night with some food. Anita from church brought over a homemade chicken pot pie. Best way in the world to satisfy a vegetable fix. The salad and cheesecake were excellent surprises as well. Thanks for thinking of us.

James‬ ‭1‬‬:‭5‬ says, If any of you lacks wisdom, you nab on should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

Father, thank you that the hearing aid thing was an easy fix. And thanks that it was still under warranty. Amen.

May 17 - “Speaking of victory”

Chris’ surgery follow up was yesterday morning. That was the one where we were supposed to head the pathology results, so Chris was kind of on edge. Well OK. We both were. There was a bit of levity when we checked in, though. Chris held the parking stub up to the scanner to get it validated. But it beeped twice instead of once. So she tried again. And again. Then she handed it to me to try. I just held it under, and the scanner went nuts. The receptionist chuckled and said, “That’s too many. We just need one beep.”  So I ran it under one more time, heard a beep, then jerked it away as fast as I could. Victory!  Thank God for small accomplishments.

And speaking of victory, the news from the surgeon was good. No cancer in the lymph nodes. They got all of the tumor. Next step (after a few weeks off to heal) is radiation, then 5 years of hormone therapy. However, Chris appears to be an ideal candidate for a clinical trial going on to see if radiology really makes a difference in patients like Chris. We have a few weeks to decide about that as well. In the meantime, she is still under restrictions concerning lifting and driving and housework, etc., etc., etc.

Yesterday afternoon we were watching the last few minutes of a Robin Hood movie. All of a sudden we heard a huge explosion. Or gunshot. Or something. I went outside, as did several of our neighbors. Come to find out, it was a transformer that blew. The other side of the street was without power. Our side was fine, though. And the power company was there in record time working on it. Quite impressive.

Psalms‬ ‭119‬‬:‭11‬ ‭says, I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Father, thank you for the good news about Chris’ surgery. Please give us some wisdom to decide about the clinical trial. Amen.

May 16 - “Detour detour”

We left Waco for home around ten. We decided to take a leisurely drive in a bit of a different direction than usual - a detour of sorts. It would eventually put us back on the same road about at our Buc-ees stop. So in Cameron, Texas, about 45 minutes or so from Waco, we stopped for a Dairy Queen burger. Pleasant place. Really good burger. We even saved enough room for a Mini-Blizzard.

We were in the car enjoying those desserts (Chris was cold inside), when she got a phone call from Christi. She said she had just found something that she thought we might need. Now what could we possibly have left that would warrant a phone call that would cause us to even remotely consider turning around?  Welllll … we forgot to pack … Chris’ heart monitor receiver. Yep. Detour detour. We were on our way back. Kinda gotta have that one.

Josh left work and went by the house to pick it up and meet us on the way. As it happened, we were almost back to Waco before we connected. But the handoff was made, and we were back on the road. Instead of resuming our off-the-beaten-track approach to travel, we hit the most efficient - and hence quickest- track. It did mean we ran into some pretty bad thunderstorms, but all was well.

We had a huge surprise awaiting us when we got home. Our fridge was stocked with some crab salad (my favorite) and some chicken salad for Chris. There were even bananas hanging from the banana perch. And on the counter? Some flowers and a great card from my much-older, and greatly-loved sister Sam. That’s one sweet lady.

Ephesians‬ ‭1‬‬:‭17‬ ‭says, I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

Father, thank you for safety on our trip home  through those storms. And thanks again for Josh’s big accomplishment. Please be with Chris today at her cancer doc follow-up appointment. Amen.

May 15 - “Mother’s Day 2023”

First Church day for DOCTOR Josh Vaughan. He was introduced as that by the children’s minister and received quite the ovation.

After church and a quick lunch of leftovers, we all went to the local high school to hear Caleb’s very first voice recital. He was the youngest one in the group of eighteen that sang solos. Of course he did fabulously. They all did really well.  Even a lady at the end who bellered out a song in some foreign opera language. And when she came to the high notes … hey, I’m not saying she missed them, but when it came time for them, I’m pretty sure she just screamed at the top of her lungs and assumed we would eat it up because it was so loud. Nope. It was just … loud. Not Caleb. He really did do a great job.  We were grandparent-level proud of him, and you can’t get any higher than that.

On the way home the boys “took Christi to Sonic for a Mother’s Day happy hour slushy.” She paid, of course. Back home they presented her with the awesome gifts they each selected. A Virgin of Guadalupe votive candle. A water bottle. Some pink flaming emblazoned flip flops. A tiny trash can for the cup holder in the car. A pineapple night light. A coffee mug. A bag of lavender potpourri. Along tall can of Dr Pepper. You know. All those completely appropriate gifts for Mom. Christi is much-loved. Oh, and the family presented Chris a basket of girly products. I have no idea what all that was.

Before we retired to watch another movie (MamaMia), I did something I haven’t done in years. I joined the boys outside for a rousing game of wiggle ball. Sort of. Actually, we made up our own rules, and there were no clear teams. We just played. That was some fun.

Proverbs‬ ‭31‬‬:‭25‬-‭26‬ ‭says, She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. 26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

Father, thanks for that wiggle ball game. I really enjoyed it. Please be with us on our journey home. Keep me awake and Chris in less pain. Amen.

May 14 - “Some creative grandsons”

The day after the highly-emotionally charged tension of the graduation started much calmer than the day before. It was raining outside. No one had any particular place to be. Well, until the ladies all took off to get AnnaGrace to her dance class photo session. That kicked in the guys’ need to race over to pick out some Mother’s Day gifts for Christi. I tagged along with them.

I gotta say, we have some creative grandsons. They came up with everything from pink flamingos to another item with, well, let’s just say an unusual outer covering. Interesting, huh?  Sorry I can’t say more. Christi may read this before they present her with the gifts. And the cards they selected were even better. Mom will be proud.

I went with Josh and Luke and MaddieBelle to the local dog park. That thing was huge. The park, not the dog. Maddie had plenty of friends there to run and play with, and she was exhausted when we left.

Last night we had pizza and watched a movie. The original Freaky Friday. Funny stuff. Then we gave out our souvenirs and watched some of our Hawaii photos. Maybe we’ll see a few more today after church and Caleb’s voice recital.

Psalms‬ ‭143‬‬:‭10 says, Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

Father, thank you for the time to just not be tense and on edge. It was nice. Amen.

May 13 - “Yay, Dad!”

Our first move out of the house  yesterday was a quick trip to a local retail establishment. This SAS Shoe Store is where I got my present feet claddings (aka shoes). They are less than a year old, but they have been to Hawaii and back. That’s a lot of miles.

Now, we weren’t going for a new pair. Nope. This trip was for a small can of old-fashioned shoe polish. The kind of of goop that you rub on your shoes, then wipe off in a buffing motion. I guess it helped a little. At least you can’t see the accumulated scuffs and scratches.

Christi and Josh (he did the grilling) fixed up a great late lunch of beef and chicken fajitas. We had to fight off the youngsters from all the amazing desserts, though. Those were being kept back for the post event festivities - a dessert congratulatory fellowship. They were bummed out, but we broke out our secret stash of Buc-ees chocolate chip cookies. Quite satisfying.

Josh left with cap and gown in hand at about 3:30 for his rehearsal. We finally followed around 4:15 or so. The actual ceremony was not held on the Baylor campus. They anticipated too many people. So they arranged to use the sanctuary of Waco’s First Baptist Church. It’s a big one, and it’s not far from the school.

We got there in plenty of time to nab some prime seats. Rows four and five center section. Right in front of where Josh received his hood. The kids were more than excited as the waited to see Dr. Dad. And by kids I mean all of us. That was one proud set of parents sitting there.

The grand processional finally began with all the pomp and ceremony you might expect. Fortunately these were only the grad school graduates-masters and above. That cut the actual time of the event way down. Definitely helpful for the kids. All of us. Especially when Josh’s name was listed dead last on the program. After all the special awards, recognition of key guests, and a highly entertaining speech by the guy who had been Josh’s advisor, the presentations began. They presented the masters degrees first, so the tension was building.

After what seemed like an eternity, the doctoral candidates were asked to rise. There were only three of them, so the anticipation became almost overwhelming. The kids were fidgety. The adults were craning our necks- and our cameras - for a better view. And finally the moment arrived. “For the degree of Doctor of Ministries, Joshua M. Vaughan.”  He began his walk across the stage to receive the diploma and to be hooded by his advisor and another faculty member. I’m sure time kind of stood still - for Josh, after his years of study and hard work, and for Christi, after her years of supporting this endeavor and enduring the hours of studying and seminars and meetings. She was certainly a key element in this celebration. And speaking of celebration, one of my favorite parts of the whole evening came when the kiddos realized that it was Dad’s turn. They cheered, and I heard Luke’s voice above the rest, “Yay, Dad!” “Yay, Dad,” indeed, guys. “Yay, Dad,” indeed.

After the event we took about a hundred pictures (surprise, surprise. After all, Chris was in the house). Several couples from their church were there to celebrate the accomplishment of their pastor, so we got to meet them. We even got to meet one of the faculty members who had been on Josh’s defense of dissertation panel.

Next we headed back to the house to consume some of the tasty desserts Christy and some friends had concocted. Everyone’s clear favorite was the sugar cookie decorated to look like a basketball and emblazoned with the designation, “Dr. J.”  Great homage to a couple of pretty great Doctors, in their own right. Some other folks from church dropped by, as did a neighbor. It was a fun time, swapping stories and munching on cake and ice cream and cookies. Great way to end a memorable night.

John‬ ‭1‬‬:‭12‬ says, Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God

Father, thank you for watching over Josh and his family through all of his years of study and preparation. And a special thanks for giving us the chance to be here. Please be with Chris now as she can really focus on recovery. Amen.

May 12 - “Seeking Dr. Josh”

We got a good start on packing for our trip to Waco. Well, up until Chris needed a breather. She crashed on the couch for an undetermined amount of minutes, so I eased into the recliner and joined her.

Nap time didn’t last more than ten or fifteen minutes, and after a quick lunch we loaded up the car. Corey and Janell came over to touch base with Freddy. Well, ostensibly to say goodbye to us and assure us that they would watch Freddy while we were gone. We really do appreciate our neighbors.

On our way we stopped at a Dairy Queen for a Blizzard. Sometime between when I went inside and came back to leave again (on a new shortcut we found), the sound on my Apple map app mysteriously stopped working. The guy just wouldn’t talk any more. We tried just about everything we could think of, but he was just on strike. We finally hooked up Chris’ phone, and her lady guided us in. Oh well. Guess I’m too old to figure out what is wrong.

Before supper, I went with Josh and Bob and Luke to watch Caleb and Zak practice football. They just started, so no pads were involved. Lots of running and drill after drill.

After a great supper we spent the evening chatting with Bob while everyone else took MaddieBelle for a walk. I closed out the evening with a rousing game of checkers with Luke. He was surprisingly good. I did beat him, but just barely.

Romans‬ ‭8‬‬:‭1 says, Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus

Father, thank you for our safe trip. And thanks for helping me stay awake while driving. Amen
