We found out why Interstate 10 was shut down causing us to be diverted in a wacky roundabout detour. Seems some guy kidnapped a 4 month old baby and led police on a wild car chase. They ended up trapping him using road spikes on the freeway right before the exit to our hotel. The kidnapper got out of the car and tried to fight back. He is dead. The baby was injured, but will be fine.
We
started the morning by heading into Biloxi.
First stop was the Biloxi lighthouse.
Pretty interesting. It is located
in the median of a busy four-lane street.
We climbed up to the top to check out the view. That’s when we realized that the light is
still there, and it is operational. In
fact, we met a guy who had used it to navigate his way back to shore the night
before. His GPS battery died, so he had
to go old school. He came to say thanks
to the light that guided him. Sounds
like a biblical application in there somewhere …
By
the way, the sand on the beach was indeed white. However, we found out that the sand was
imported from Australia. Yep. Shipped in back in the 40’s when they built a
seawall of sorts and created a beach.
Next
we stopped at the summer home of none other than president of the confederacy,
Jefferson Davis. The tour was a little
interesting. Well, not much. We saw the harp room, the pipe smoking room,
the dining room for adults and a separate one for kids, the master bedrooms –
two separate ones, and the scary doll children’s bedroom. Best parts of the tour? 1) The mention the guide made to the War of
Northern Aggression. 2) The grave stone
of Jeff Davis’ dog, Traveller. We also
found and adopted old Barney Bottomly Bear, a CSA vet. See, there’s a little known fact. Late in the war the CSA actually started
conscripting local bears in the war effort.
Unfortunately, they proved a little too difficult to fit uniforms
for. And without uniforms, they were
impossible to tell apart from the Northern Bears. Our old fella is a replica of a soldier that is
rumored to have served in Jeff Davis’ staff.
Our
next stop was supposed to be a National Park stamp area. Perhaps it was, but the visitor’s center was
closed. No stamp. Waaa.
We
had lunch at a place called Woody’s.
Local cuisine. Best burger I have
had in years. At least a half pound of
fresh ground beef, two kinds of cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato. Also, a side of fried cheese bombs. Wow.
We ate about half and took the rest to be heated up in the hotel room
for supper.
Chris
took over driving somewhere in Mississippi before we got into Alabama. We didn’t stop there, because the plan is to
go there when Josh and his family arrive in a few weeks. She did get to drive through a tunnel,
though. she was not too happy about
that.
We
finally alit at a hotel in Pensacola, Florida.
Well, that was after three tries.
The first two places were really busts.
Wouldn’t recommend them at all. Suffice
it to say that Quality Inns are off the table for the forseeable future. But now we are decompressing. Astros game on TV …

John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive
our sins and cleans us from all unrighteousness.”
Father,
thank you for the safe travels thus far.
Please be with that baby involved in the police incident. Amen.
