I had to make yet another quick trip to Walmart yesterday. How many is that? Four? Five? All I needed was a few game prizes. I decided to spice up the egg hunt for the older kids. Game I called The Real Egg Hunt. Three teams. Guys blindfolded. Girls have to direct them to appropriately colored eggs.
Meanwhile Chris was active in the kitchen. She baked two apple pies and made a batch of puddin’ pie. That’s some good dessert.
Speaking of eggs, our next project was filling up the plastic eggs for the actual hunt. Ten dozen. That’s a lot of eggs.
Then, in a departure from tradition of past years, I hid all those eggs in the back yard while Chris took a shower. I hoped they would find them all. Some were hidden pretty well.
Zak and Lindsay arrived first, then Kel, then April, Cailyn and A.J. Christina and the rest of the gang pulled in sometime after. By that time I was hungry. And I was not alone.
But first …
The kids set to work dyeing eggs. And when that task was completed, we adjourned to the backyard egg hunt. All but three eggs were uncovered. As Kel said, “we’ll find ‘em next year.”
After the hunt came that extra game attraction. Teams were: Cailyn and Jachin, Micah and Kaylie, and Zak and Lindsay. The game began, and the other kids (and Kel) played their roles as other barnyard animals. Noisy barnyard animals. Made it hard for the blindfolded guys to distinguish their personal guides. All three teams won prizes. Lots of laughing. Great, great fun. Oh, and then there was the brief but raucous confetti egg smashing.
The frivolity led well into a great dinner of ham and chicken nuggets and potatoes and carrots and salad and macaroni and cheese and baked beans. Followed by that amazing aforementioned dessert.
But before we ate we listened to that old song by Carman called something like “It’s Friday, but Sunday’s coming.” One of my all-time favorites. We also listened to S.M. Lockridge’s sermon of basically the same title. Great lead-in to the pre-meal prayer.
After everyone but Zak and Lindsay left, we watched the movie Passion of the Christ. It has been a long time since I have seen that one. Very violent. Very powerful.
Sunday’s coming!
John 15:13 says, No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.
Father, thanks for you for what you did on the cross. Thank you as well that you didn’t stay dead. Sure makes Sunday worth waiting for. Amen.
