October 9 – “A perspective on World War III”

We went to the Rosenberg Library used book sale the other day.  We met Jachin and Micah and Josiah and Noa and their parents.  We also saw Brennan and his Mom and Dad.  Oh, and one of the ladies in our water exercise class.  There were lots of other people there, too.  Quite the social event.  Gotta love it when people realize that there is still something about holding a book in your hands.  I know that you can have an entire library at your fingertips with Kindle and all those other apps.  But holding a book, turning its pages, fumbling for a bookmark when you have to stop, and of course the excitement you feel when you pick it back up again and thumb through to find you last place so you can begin again.

The Vaughan kids all came over to our house after the sale.  In fact, Josiah managed to get permission to ride with us.  And on the way home he made a disturbing announcement.  Listen in on this snippet of our conversation:

Josiah: “I want a World War III.
Us (More than a bit stunned): “Umm. No!  We don’t want that.”
Josiah: “Why not.”
Me (Waxing wise and philosophical): “Because people get hurt.  AND … you might have to be the one doing the fighting.”
Chris (Toning down the rhetoric and getting more to the point): “Because you’re too little.”
Josiah (After pondering that more sober side of the situation): “But I could do some pretty evil stuff to the bad guys.  Since I’m little I could hide and trip them and take their gun and shoot them.”
Me: “Can’t argue with that.”
Chris: “No.  You’re too little.”

2 Corinthians 9:8 says, “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed.”

Father, thank you for the men and women who do serve our country in the armed forces.  Watch over them.  And walk with the veterans who make a new life for themselves when they come back home.  Amen.
