We
had a pretty good day at church yesterday.
September 11th, the fifteenth anniversary of the terrorist
attack on the U.S. The crowd was fairly
small, but when our worship pastor started off by singing God Bless the USA,
the whole room spontaneously stood up and sang along. Afterward I prayed, “God, bless our country,
our leaders, and touch our enemies. Draw
all of them to you in Jesus’ name. Amen.” There was not a lot of fanfare and
showmanship. Just a simple tribute
followed by a simple request for God to be involved in our country. I think maybe that’s what we need, a return
to simpler days of trusting in God … first.
One
of our visitors had just moved to Galveston from his home in Spring, about two
hours away. His family has not joined
him yet, but he was determined to check out “the little church out here in the
West End.” Jim (the worship pastor)
found out he could play guitar and, as is his practice, invited him to join the
praise team … right then. Dale agreed,
and his skill was quite a treat. So glad
he has dedicated it to God. He said he
plans to be back again.
One
reason Jim could so readily invite him was because our other guitarist Lynn
(who also happens to be our AC guy) was at home nursing a pretty bad staph infection
in his leg caused by a spider bite of some kind. Very painful, and it has affected his ability
to even get around. He is on some
heavy-duty antibiotics, and his health-conscious wife is watching him very
carefully. Prayer for him was also part
of our service time together.
So,
robust singing, lots of prayer, and a Word from the Book of Acts. Nice day, spiritually. Maybe we can do that again … next Sunday?

Corinthians 1:3-4 says, “Praise be to the
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God
of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort
those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.”
Father,
thank you for praise. It sure does help
get in touch with you. Amen.
