About 9:30 we headed off to a new adventure. The ultimate goal was to get Jachin to the airport in Charlottesville. But on the way we had one other stop to make.
We set the gps for the Rockfish Gap entrance to the Shenandoah National Park. New National Park unlocked! Hike time.
And boy, was it ever a hike. The ranger pointed it out. Told us it was classified as “Moderate.” Nope. Not moderate. Difficult to downright hard by my rating. Hard to extreme by Chris’.
Speaking of Chris … she had some real trouble with this one. In fact, she had to deal with one of her heart spells on the trail. We found a rock and sat her down to wait it out. And then …
When we started back up for a final attempt, we came upon a tree across the trail. No way around it. Had to go over it. And she made it halfway. Right up until … her hiking boot fell apart. The tread part just … fell off. That was it. I told her that perhaps this was the Lord hinting that we had gone far enough. Heart issues. Short of breath. Tree in trail. Blown shoe. That’s enough.
She did agree, and we started back. Got a text from the rest of the crew that they were heading back as well. Of course with our stopping and starting they caught up with us before long.
And when they found us, the kids were so excited they could hardly stand it. Not that they reached the summit, which they did. Nope. The excitement came when Ezra, who was leading the pack, almost stepped right in a nest of four really large copperheads. Yep. It was indeed time to start back down. Right away. Run away!
The other vehicle headed on to the airport. See you soon, Jachin. On our way back to the house, we stopped at Walmart to see if Chris’ prescription ever came through. After almost an hour of waiting, the pharmacy here got the fax from Galveston. However … apparently the pharmacy there pushed the wrong button and indicated they had filled it already. As a result, to get it here the cost would be a mere $1,000. Nope. Chris made them work back through the process with the insurance company. It was all a convoluted mess, but (skip rapidly to the bottom line here) she has the meds and we can continue the trip. Whew!
Matthew 5:16 says, In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
Father, thank you for being with us through that hike. And thanks for the help getting Chris’ meds. Amen.
