March 5 – “You may ki … run for cover”

After two softball games in the cold, misting rain yesterday morning, it was nice to spend an afternoon inside.  Chris did some more quilting.  I went over the sermon and tried to get ahead on some of next weeks’ regular work, since we are supposed to have some Waco-ish company.  I also squeaked in some uke practice before catching an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise on Netflix.  All that before venturing outside again in the evening for a wedding.

Last night Dan, one of the fire fighters, and his long-time girlfriend Nicole tied the knot outside of Garten Verein, a really pretty events venue here on the Island.  Problem was, we were operating on a window-type format.  The windows we were looking for were of the no-rain kind.  Now the rain was never the hard, pelting, drive you to cover at all costs kind.  But there were numerous hairdos and pretty dresses at risk, not to mention the chill in the air.  Not that it was cold, mind you.  I guess the temperature was in the 60’s, but with the wind and rain, it was just north of miserable.  The window held for just long enough, though.  I reached the point where I had to decide between “You may kiss your bride” and “Everybody run for cover.”  Kissing the bride won this time.  They were even able to get in the picture taking.  Couldn’t miss the picture-taking.  Especially since all the guys were wearing kilts.  Quite the sight.

The reception was much more relaxed.  After all, it was inside.  It had all the customary toasts and special dances.  Chris and I made it to the top five or six couples who had been married the longest.  The winner had been married fifty years, though.  Can’t compete with them … yet.  Cailyn made her way onto the open dance floor, and it was almost impossible to get her off.  She finally formed a triumvirate with one of the fire fighter wives and a little bitty girl she was holding, and the three of them danced the night away.  Oh, and aside from the time or two Chris and I made our way back onto the floor, I was invited to dance by someone a bit unexpectedly.  Nathan, kilt and all, came over and took my hand during the all-time favorite song, The Twist.  He and I schooled everyone else who were attempting to keep up with us.  I gotta say, back in my high school days I did dance with a few people wearing skirts, but none of them were quite as … as … well, let’s just say, this was a … new experience.

2 Thessalonians 3:3 says, “But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.”

Father, be with Dan and Nicole as they embark on their new journey together.  Amen.
