November 30 - “Pretty intense moments”

It was an especially early morning for me. Not that I woke up any earlier, but I did have somewhere to be quite early. The fire fighters’ union paid my way to a training session that was actually designed for peer support in recognizing and handling fellow firefighters who were experiencing depression or suicidal tendencies. There were some pretty intense moments as the guys from Galveston had to relive the death of a fellow fire fighter not that long ago.  They came through it all really well, though.  I enjoyed lunch at Shrimp and Stuff, the downtown version, with three of the fire fighters from the Dallas area.  Their department sent them to the training to get a peer counseling team started up there.  The training continues all day today.

However, I won’t be able to attend. I am officiating a funeral in Santa Fe today.  A long-time Seasider who moved there a while back, Boyd Chipman, died, and his service is at 1 today. Boyd was a great guy to have for a friend.  He was always willing to give the shirt off his back – or the contents of his freezer (read here speckled trout fillets) for a fish fry to send kids to camp – to someone in need.  And his sense of humor was infectious.  I loved the way his eyes kind of lit up as a grin spread across his face.  And once he started laughing, tears would inevitably leak down his cheeks.  Sometimes he couldn’t even finish his story, because he knew the punchline and would get cracked up before he could get it out.

Matthew 6:3 says, But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

Father, be with Boyd’s family at the funeral today.  Wrap your arms around them so they can feel your presence.  Amen.

November 29 - “Doctor Doogie”

At 8 a.m. we took Chris to a new doc to check her implanted monitor. Doc looked like he was about 12 or 13 years old - a regular “Doctor Doogie.”  But then, he was responsible for the high-tech device she has implanted, so I was good with a youngster who was up on technology. He did have a stutter but was very personable and knowledgeable. In a nutshell, there has been nothing of significance recorded since the monitor has been in. In other words, she doesn’t need a pacemaker yet.

The doc’s mantra was “we need more information.”  Not sure when that will change to “we have enough information.”  In an effort to gather more information, however, he ordered a new test to see if she has Vaso-vagal syncope. That’s what Kel was diagnosed with. Basically, his recommendation was, “Keep doing what you’ve been doing.  Sit down if you feel like you may pass out.”  Well, all righty, then.

Chris had a physical therapy appointment at 1 pm, so I took the truck and did a bank errand. It was great to have it start right up. Oh, before we left, Chris turned on the kitchen sink, only to find that we had no water. A quick look outside revealed the issue, though. City crews were connecting our brand-new water line to our brand-new water meter. We knew this one was coming. It only lasted twenty or thirty minutes, though, and we were back in business.

Hebrews 11:1 says, Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Father, thank you for the simple things like running water on demand. Amen.

November 28 - “Welcome, Christmas”

It was another great Sunday at church. Lots of people were there to worship.  Of course Josh and his family came.  They were a little late because of me, I’m afraid.  We knew we were going to stay for a while after church (more about that later).  Chris had forgotten her eye drops, though.  She has to take them four times a day now in anticipation of cataract surgery.  I texted Josh to see if they could bring the bottle when they came.  Unfortunately they had already left.  He texted to let me know that and ask if they needed to return to the house and get them.  I didn’t get the text until much later, though, so they turned around and went back just in case.  Sorry about that, guys.

Now on to the “after church” comment.  We stayed to help with the decoration of the church after service. Pizza was ordered from Way West, the local restaurant. Christmas boxes came out from the closets.  People scurried all around to get the lights and garland up around the ceiling.  We had to leave early though. Chris had one of her spells that left her feeling bad. We were sorry to bail on the work, but once she gets to that point, she just needs to lie down for a while.  After we got home, Corey and Janell and Brennan came over for a few minutes.  They had just returned from their big Thanksgiving trip, so we got to hear all about it.  They also wanted to know what the deal was about the shooting on our street.  Neighbors gotta keep each other informed, you know?

We took it east the rest of the day. Chris managed to get in her nap.  We even watched a few Christmas movies before calling it a wrap on another Thanksgiving weekend.  And I guess with that we have officially welcomed another Christmas.

Isaiah 40:3 says, A voice of one calling: In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.’”

Father, please be with us as we check in with one of Chris’ doctors this morning.  Some more answers would be nice.  Or at least some more steps in the right direction.  Amen.

November 27 - “Turkey Bowl 2022”

Quick trip to Walmart in the morning. Just me and Chris. It was kinda nice. Quiet. I told her “hello” on the way over. She remembered me. Sort of. We just grabbed a few finishing touches for our chicken enchilada pie lunch to come.

And what a lunch it was. Two huge casserole dishes full of the good stuff. We ate all but one corner of one of them. Josh had his full three servings. Then Nathan arrived. We told him the tiny amount left was all there was for him. And then we pulled out the other one for him. One would think our boys kind of like that stuff.

The Turkey Bowl followed soon after lunch. This year’s version happened on the wide expanses of Galveston Beach. Not sure which team won, but Luke was convinced it was the team he was on. So be it. We had three nominees for the Turkey Bowl 2022 trophy.

1.      Pre-game stretches by the three dads, Kel, Josh, and Nathan.

2.    First ever play outcome decided purely by instant replay.

3.    Cailyn’s game-saving take down of Caleb to stop a sure touchdown. (Yes. We were playing touch).

And the unanimous winner was … drumroll here … Cailyn’s takedown!

After a series of rapid-fire showers, we all headed out to the beach again for some family pictures, courtesy of Shawn Porsche from Seaside. It was really cold, but I’m pretty sure she got some good shots.  Can’t wait to see them.

Back at the house we had some pizza and cupcakes to celebrate AnnaGrace’s birthday. Then it was time to haul down the Christmas tree (and decorations) from the attic.  Josiah and Caleb crawled up the ladder and handed down boxes.  The other kids formed an assembly line into the den. Some of the adults (and Ezra) got the tree put together, and then Christina got the lights started. The two tall guys, Jachin and Josh, finished the top. Nani handed out ornaments to the kids to hang on the tree. Micah and Zak and Caleb collaborated to get the wooden manger scene out in the yard. All the while a Christmas song mix played on the TV.

Numbers 6:24-26 says, The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

Father, thank you for family traditions and really good food. Amen.

November 26 - “a girl movie?”

Friday was our official family Thanksgiving Day. It was the first time we could all be together. Josh and Christi used the early morning hours to make a Black Friday shopping trip to Walmart. They returned with a few dozen assorted donuts, so they were quite popular.

All the cousins were here for lunch. They brought to their parents, too.  The food was typical Thanksgiving fare: turkey and dressing, ham, green bean casserole, corn casserole, plain old green beans and plain old corn (you’re welcome, Josh), sweet potatoes, salad, deviled eggs, (and probably some other dishes I can’t remember), and lots and lots of desserts. Among my favorites: several versions of apple pie, Sam’s key lime pie, and April’s tortilla stuff. Not to mention the pumpkin and pecan pies and homemade chocolate chip cookies and whatever else flowed from the forearms of one of our hard-working bakers.

After lunch, the kids settled in with video games, while the old guys eased onto the sofa. We watched some football, then cheered on the U.S.A. in the soccer World Cup. Great game as they played the heavily favored England team to a scoreless tie.

Food still abounded, and we grazed the rest of the day. We did fit in one of those infamous romantic comedies, too. Or in Christi’s words to AnnaGrace, “is DadDad watching a girl movie?”

Galatians 6:10 says, Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

Father, thanks for days where the family can gather and enjoy good food and each other. Amen.

November 25 - “Emergency on Sycamore“

Thanksgiving Day. Around here that means fire department deliveries are in order. I started out early and headed to the station farthest west on the island, Sea Isle, to deliver a bag of fried turkey and wish the guys on duty a happy holiday. From there I stopped in Pirates Beach, followed by the long drive to the opposite end of the island and station two, which is near UTMB. After that I swung by station one downtown and station five on Broadway. My final stop was station four at the airport near our house. They are all always appreciative, and this year they all were particularly talkative. I had a great time.

As I was leaving station five, I heard a call go out about a gunshot wound on … Sycamore Drive. Wait. That’s my street. Sure enough, Lauren texted to check on us, and I was passed by several police cars and a social services emergency vehicle. Didn’t even know they had emergency vehicles. Come to find out, some teenagers at the far opposite end of the street had been playing with a gun. And that never ends well. Fortunately, the wound was a through and through in the shoulder, so the kid was fine. Let’s keep that stuff away from our end of the street, please.

Sam came over and joined Chris and me for Thanksgiving Day lunch. Everyone else will be here today. It was sure quiet. Well, except for the intermittent thunder.

Josh and his family pulled up in the early evening. About halftime of the Cowboys game and just a few minutes into the second Great American Christmas movie of the day.

Psalms 9:1 says, I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.”

Father, thank you for the safe trip you gave Josh and his crew through the thunderstorms. Amen.

November 24 - “Prep Day”

My day began quite early.  I had a 7:45 physical therapy appointment. It was the evaluation intro, so she turned my hips every which way but loose. And she definitely found the spot that hurts.  She went over her findings with me, then did something I really didn’t expect.  She gave me the option of coming in for therapy or doing it at home.  Three guesses which of the two I chose.  She assigned me some appropriate exercises, printed out a few pages showing how to do them, and said “come back in three weeks if you promise to do them at home.” Yup.  Done.

Kel and Noa and Ezra were there when I got home. Of course, Cailyn was still there as well. Kel already had his turkey air fryer set up. I set up our grease one and lit the fire. His was ready faster. Mine cooked faster. Much faster. Mine did two turkeys to his one. But his won in the cleanup department. In the end, we fried six turkeys. Got them cut off the bone and ready to go for Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, Chris and the girls (and Ezra) made four or five pies and a few batches of cookies. And around 4, Chris rewarded everyone’s hard work by doling out a slice of pie for all comers. Yum.

Psalms 23:6 says, Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Father, thank you for the help we had yesterday for Prep Day. Now please grant their families safe travels today as they head to their various places to celebrate Thanksgiving.  And bring our gang safely here for tomorrow. Amen.

November 23 - “A gruesome discovery”

We made a gruesome discovery as I was loading the car to head home. On the floor in the back seat was a large plastic bag. And inside that bag was not one … not two … but three of those old baby dolls. You know. The kind that watch you with those eyes that open and close. The kind that come to life at night and … scare. Horribly scare. I quickly covered them up with a blanket and went inside to ask Chris about their origin. She had no idea. She asked Christi. Again, no idea. I asked Josh. Nope. No idea. I approached Caleb, but he neither knew about, nor wanted any part of such weirdness. And so we headed home. With three extra passengers. Safely ensconced in their plastic bag under two blankets and our heaviest jackets. What will become of them when we get home?  No idea. The bigger question is … what will become of us?

Luke had been watching football highlights for a while on tv. Apparently, his “a while” ran out, and it was AnnaGrace’s turn. Christi made the transfer of remote power official, so Luke queried of his little sister,

“What’s your favorite sport to watch, AnnaGrace?”

She replied with little hesitation, “Ballet.”

Luke pondered that for a moment, then lit up.

“How about gymnastics?”

Good compromise, Luke.

We left for home around 9:30. Goodbyes were interesting. Mostly some version of “See ya in two days.”  They are coming for Thanksgiving. Speaking of coming for Thanksgiving, we stopped on the way home and picked up an extra passenger. Cailyn joined us to help prep the turkeys for frying and then to help bake pies. Gonna be gooooood.

Psalms 119:2 says, Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart

Father, please give everyone safe travels when they hit the road this week. Amen.

November 22 - “An Audie Murphy Tale”

I met an old war veteran the other day.  We were in line together to get Wednesday night supper at Josh’s church.  Out of the blue he asked if I knew who Audie Murphy was.  I said I did.  He then told me an anecdote he personally witnessed. “Audie was a little man, but not someone you would mess with.  He was giving a training talk and a fella way up in the top of the bleachers was talking to the fella next to him.  Audie had enough of that and called the chatty one down to the front next to him.  He looked the fella in the eye and said, ‘Take me down.’  The young man didn’t believe him at first, but Audie insisted.  So the fella came at him.  Audie took him right down to the ground in no time.  Then he helped him us and said, ‘Now get back up there to your seat and shut up.’”

Josh, Christi, and Zak left around seven. They were taking Zak for his college visit to Hardin Simmons University. It’s about two hours away, and so far is his top choice. Christi imparted all the pertinent instructions to me. As far as I can remember there were only two:

1.      Make sure they eat.

2.    If they want to do video games, text me for a list of chores they have to do first.

I might have that second one a little garbled, though. I think what she meant to say was, “If they want to play video games, say yes.” I figure the eating part will take care of itself. We’ll just make sure there are plenty of chips and donuts cookies around.

Well, best laid plans and all that. My schemes to keep things that simple kind of died in the water when Chris got up. Sigh. Sorry, kids. Chores it is.

I took a brief break about mid-morning to run up to Target. The Sunday School class we attend when up here is doing a project where they give gift cards to the teachers and staff of a nearby elementary school. We thought we would grab one and let Josh and Christi turn it in for us. Target had an array of cards to random places, but I decided to stick to the familiar. I debated between-Target and Starbucks, but Target gift card won in the end.

After lunch we all worked faithfully to fulfill Mom’s list of chores that she left for each kid to do before any video games were allowed. I had helping AnnaGrace to clean her room. Loved her answer when I asked where something went. “In the doll pile right over there.”  Of course. Why didn’t I think of that?

I still don’t know if we ever found the right place for the “Doll Pile” and its myriad of contents. We did get down to where you could see the floor, though. I hurriedly took a picture and sent it to Christi as proof of accomplishment. Why hurriedly?  Before I could even stoop to pick up the dirty socks I found, AnnaGrace had begun re-establishing the ever-present Doll Pile. What was I thinking?

When the college visitors returned, I joined Josh and Caleb for a trip to the phone store. Josh’s phone no longer holds a charge for longer than an hour or two. He checked at ATT but ended up at the battery store to just replace the battery. While we waited for the installation, we made our way to a nearby hobby store, where Caleb flew a simulator for model airplanes. We also went over to the nearest Half Priced Books store. In case you are interested, on Black Friday they are having a big sale. Everything in the store is $1.00.

Mark 16:15 says, He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

Father, thanks for getting Josh and Christi and Zak home safely. And thanks for our day with the other three. Amen.

November 21 - “5-4-3-2-1”

I was casually eating my breakfast when I was greeted by a sly-grinning little face. AnnaGrace was standing very close. I listened intently as she whispered, “I have a surprise to show you. Are you ready?”  I assured her I was paying close attention. She continued, “5-4-3-2-1!” At that she opened her mouth. Fortunately, I had been warned by her the day before that she had a wiggly tooth, so I asked where it was. She excitedly explained, “My tooth fell out last night.”  Suddenly, she stopped. A look if realization came across her face. “Wait. Did the tooth fairy came last night?” Off she ran, back to her bedroom. Sure enough, her reward was there. Christi told me that AnnaGrace came into their bedroom at 3 in the morning to inform them of the big event. And, hey. Losing your first wiggly tooth is about as big as it gets for a six-year-old.

After church we went out to eat at … Rosa’s … Mexican food … again. This time I switched out my order and had tamales and queso. Not too bad. I’d order it again.

Instead of heading back to the house, we went back to the church and helped pack shoeboxes for kids overseas. When all was said and done, we packed up 585 boxes, over a hundred more than they usually do. Nice job, guys.

Finally, we sat in on their business meeting. The main business was the calling of a new youth pastor. We had met him before and really liked him. All went well with the vote. He is now “official.”  He will do a great job.

Psalms 100:4 says, Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.”

Father, please be with Zak as he visits Howard Payne University today. Keep them safe on the road, and give him clarity in what he’s looking for. Amen.

November 20 - “An excursion excursion”

Everybody else left early. 7:31, to be exact. They were headed to their to church’s family camp an hour or so away. We didn’t have to leave until 8:30 (or close to it). Our destination was the Mansfield area. It was finally time to sign up for the daily excursions we plan to take on our Hawaii trip.

We met up with the Huntley’s and the Winkles around 10, and by 1 we had selected, reserved and paid for (ouch) our excursions for our Hawaii trip. The rest of the day we spent eating a chicken soup lunch prepared by Dianne, just chatting and overall beginning to get excited.

When we got home I was able to figure out their TV enough that we watched a movie on the Disney channel: Disenchanted. It was a sequel to the movie Enchanted.  Imagine that.

Proverbs 17:17 says, A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.”

Father, please be with the Columbus Avenue group as they finish up Family camp this morning and head home. Amen.

November 19 - “So close, yet again”

It was a quiet day in the neighborhood. The kids and Christi were at the homeschool co-op day. We did join Josh on his walk with MaddieBelle. Can’t say he took her for the walk. She was definitely doing the tugging on that leash. Once we got to the park he was able to remove the leash and let her run. And run she did. She chased birds and explored bushes and was enjoying every minute.

Christi came home at lunchtime, and she and Josh took us out to eat. They chose a place called the Brown House Cafe. I had to ask Chris just now what that name was. I keep wanting to call it the Brown Cow that sells chocolate milk. I had chicken fried steak and crispy fried okra and cheesy mac and cheese. Decadent, not-so-healthy-but-oh-so-tasty food.

After lunch we went over to the SAS shoe store. Chris has been looking for one to replace the insole of her dress shoes. Success. While there, I checked out their shoes for men. They have a great reputation, and Chris swears by them. They are really expensive, though. We talked about it decided to give them a try. They better last about five times longer than my last five pair have.

Last night we hit yet another basketball game. This one was Zak’s. They were playing a bit of a rivalry game, so tensions were high. I don’t think the refs expected it to be such an intense game, either. They missed quite a few calls both ways. Zak’s team at one point was behind by 19. They came back in the fourth quarter and fell just short, 43-39. Real similar to what Caleb’s team did. Zak played a great game. The whole team did well, seeing as how the other team had two guys who were 6’4”.  I was proud of our guys.

James 1:17 says, Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Father, help these boys get plenty of rest as they continue to work hard and get better and better. And be with the parents who have to live through these crazy close games. Amen.

November 18 - “Battle Royale”

Chris and I went over our selections for excursions for our Hawaii trip. We have to book them this weekend when we go to Arlington to hang out with the Winkles and Huntley’s. The trip is getting closer. 139 days to go.

Christi went out and got some pizzas for lunch. Easy way to feed five growing boys (Micah and Josiah spent the night) and a gorgeous little girl. The rest of the LaMarque clan arrived shortly after lunch.

Meanwhile, the big boys broke out their air soft guns and got a battle royale going in the ravine. They blasted each other for an hour or so then came in for a long session of video games. I spent the time reading and dozing. Not saying what percentage of each was involved.

The ladies took all the Littles to the park for a while. Chris used the opportunity to get in a two mile walk. I was proud of her. Meanwhile, I drove over and picked up Kel at their B&B, and we returned for supper back at Josh’s. What else would we have but ………. Mexican food. This time we had some pretty good tamales from HEB. Amazing how much variety you can get from the same genre of food.

Last night was all about basketball. Zak started with practice at 3 or 4. That was the easy part. At 7, Luke had practice in a little community about 15 or 20 minutes away. Caleb, however, had a game not far from the house that started at 8. I went with Josh to watch Luke practice. We met up with everyone else at the game after practice was over. Caleb’s team was down by 18 points at one point but came back, only to fall just short at 37-29. Caleb played his usual stifling defense.  He played the entire fourth quarter with four fouls.  Good game, guys.

Luke 6:28 says, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”

Father, please be with the LaMarque crew on their way back home today. Amen.

November 17 - “Cavapoos”

After our late-night at the basketball games (we got home around midnight), Christi and Caleb and MaddieBelle were waiting up for us. I think after that, we all expected - or at least hoped - that we would certainly be able to sleep in this morning.

Well … not so much for me. At some point in the night, I was rudely awakened by cramps in both hamstrings. No pain quite like the one that wakes you from a dead sleep. The cramps did finally pass, though, and I was able to get back to sleep. But around 5:45 a new sleep interrupter arrived. I woke up sneezing. Crazy, right?  I finally had to get up just to blow my nose. Since I was out of bed anyway, I stayed up and began my morning routine. Josh finally came in around 7:15, and Christi followed soon thereafter. What a night. What a short night.

I had a brief chat with AnnaGrace before breakfast. She was staring at my ring, so I asked her if she liked it. She replied, “That’s not a ring.”  Confused, I assured her it indeed was a ring, but she insisted to the contrary. Finally, I asked her, “Well, if it’s not a ring, what is it?”  She thought for a moment, then quipped, “It’s a random circle.” Hmm. It is that. And this from a six-year-old.

Early afternoon brought the arrival of the LaMarque cousins. The kiddos played for a while, then we took a field trip to a ranch outside of Waco. The owners are members of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church. They are also breeders of some really cute puppies called Cavapoos. They are a mixture of poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They wanted the kids to play with one of the latest batches to get them used to being around people. They will sell them for a lot of money, and the proceeds go to a ministry in Uganda. I’ll just say there were some seriously dangerous levels of cuteness. It was a good thing April wasn’t here …

Last night we went to church supper. All the signs said “Spaghetti and meatballs.”  But somehow something changed. The meatballs became fajitas, and the spaghetti transformed into chips and salsa. Yep. Mexican food again. I know Chris has enjoyed it, but we’ve had Mexican food at least six or eight times since we have been up here. Hey. I just appreciate that we have had food.

Chris went to a ladies Bible study with Christi and Christina. I went into the one Josh teaches. It was a lot of fun. He kind of threw out some controversial topics and let the group take off. I especially liked when he played Forced Choice and made us choose between Astros and Rangers. I won that one, one to everyone else. Go Astros.

John‬ ‭14‬:‭21‬ says, “Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”mm

Father, please be with the family raising those puppies. And bless the ministry in Africa. Amen.

November 15 - “Two-pronged personal Waco watch”

We went back up to the convention for another breakfast burrito. This one had sausage and bacon. “Meat lovers,” the server called it. Pretty good stuff. After we ate, we took another stroll through the vendor rooms. There were not many people there, and the vendors went out of their way to gift us with their give-aways.  Hmm. Nice.

Chris and I went to a session on the outlook for ministry in Texas after Roe v. Wade was repealed. It was interesting to hear all the resources available even now. In the words of the presenter: “We have the bandwidth to deal with post-Roe v. Wade world.”  “Bandwidth”? Haven’t heard that terminology in a while.

From there we headed out. The conference was pretty much over, so we did our two-pronged personal Waco watch. First, we drove by the Castle. It’s the big building that Chip and Joanna Gaines renovated for their tv show. Pretty impressive edifice. Next, we went by Academy and HEB to do some indoor walking. I may or may not have snuck in a few (5, more or less) cups of frozen lemonade into the cart. Can’t wait.

I was “invited” into AnnaGrace’s room to play. It was all about Barbie the Ballerina and Ken the dark hair who loved Barbie from afar. Also involved was Ken of the blonde locks, who had an obvious leap on the competition. And by leap, I mean he was a ballerina as well.  He was able to lift Barbie into the air and twist himself into varying degrees of ouch. His only mistake came when he tried to present Barbie with a ring. He was soundly rejected. I mean she kicked it out of his hand violently. He made a rapid comeback, though. After all, the show must go on. I’m pretty sure there was more that went on in the saga, but I fell asleep. AnnaGrace didn’t wake me up. In fact, I think she finally dozed a bit as well. Interesting creatures, these girls …

Last night we drove down to Georgetown to watch Zak’s first basketball game of the year. Four of their guys just got done with football and have had one practice - Zak included. You could really tell the basketball cobwebs had set in. The good guys managed to pull it out, though. 32-30 good guys. In overtime. A real nail biter. We ended up staying around to watch the varsity girls game (sad state of affairs) and the varsity guys game (good guys won by six or seven). I have missed basketball …

Isaiah 60:3 says, “Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.”

Father, thanks for my time watching AnnaGrace play. I’m just glad she wanted me around. Amen.

November 15 - “Oops.”

We were up and out of the house by 7:15 to get to the Texas Baptist Convention by 7:30. Actually we were getting there in time to grab a free breakfast burrito from the Texas Baptist Men Food Truck.

The guy who spoke at the opening session was really good. Very engaging and funny. He’s the bi-vocational pastor of a new church in Waxahachie. We met up with Kel and sat with him. He then went to a breakout, and we perused the vendor halls. That’s always where I stock up on pens and other free stuff to carry me through for the next year.

Later we met up with Josh and accompanied him to the business session. It was pretty full, so we stood in the back. Not that we were being particularly nice. It’s just so much easier to cut up back there. As it turned out, the only one cutting up was Chris. After a while she let it be known that she needed to sit down right away. Not a good sign. We got her over to the platform where the A/V guy was sitting. She tried her usual energy bar and water, but nothing really helped. It was one of those spells that she just had to wait out. This one took a good fifteen minutes. When it finally started to pass, she and Josh compared pass-out symptoms. Another day in the life … sigh.

Chris and Christina then went to a luncheon for ministry wives. Chris won a really pretty flower arrangement/table centerpiece for being in ministry the longest at her table. 50 years was hard to beat.

Meanwhile, Kel and I went to what we thought was a building with a collection of restaurants in it. Josh recommended it. Except when we arrived it was a restaurant all right, but a ragtag soul food joint in a seedy part of town. I called Josh. His response? “Oops.”  He had given us the wrong name of the place. And to make matters worse, when we arrived at the correct site … Josh was eating at the very place he meant to send us to. Oops, indeed. We found a sandwich shop with some good food, though.

We hung out for a while after lunch, chatting with Josh. By then my back was pretty much done, so we headed home. Josh went to Zak’s basketball practice. Kel headed back in to the next breakout session.

Last night we all went to Caleb’s first basketball game. It was a good one. In the first half the good guys were having a tough time putting the game away. The bad guys just kept hanging around. And then Caleb stepped up and deposited himself in the back pocket of the other team’s point guard. The kid just couldn’t get the ball. Caleb’s stifling defense led to a multitude of turnovers, and the whole complexion of the game changed. In the end, the good guys won by 30 points.

Psalms 103:19 says, The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.

Father, thank you for watching over Chris when she has these spells. I sure don’t know what to do with them. Amen.

November 14 - “Calmly backed away”

It was awfully cold when we woke up yesterday. 31 degrees. As Luke said, “that’s below freezing!”  Indeed it is, Luke. Indeed it is.

We went to church at Columbus Avenue to worship and hear Josh preach. He did a great job in the midst of a few “interesting” events. First, the heater was on the blink, and it was 31 degrees outside. At least all the bodies warmed things up a bit.

Next, as he entered his office and set down his Bible and briefcase, what should greet him but a flurry of movement near his feet.  You guessed it. A rat had made its way into the building. Josh first told us that he calmly backed away and out of the room and reported the matter to the proper people. Then he fessed up. “By ‘calmly backed away,’ I mean, ‘ran down the hall screaming like a little girl.’”  His staff didn’t know what the horrendous noise was. Great start to the morning.

It was a scheduled baptism day, so Josh then headed to the baptistery to check things out there. Apparently, the tank wasn’t holding the water. Josh got someone on that problem and walked into the sanctuary. It was the Sunday for their quarterly celebration of The Lord’s Supper. And nothing was set up. That’s a pretty big deal. Again, Josh handed that one off and trusted it would get done.

Finally, I forgot to mention that it was child dedication day. Why add that to the already busy schedule? One of the dads was a deployed Marine who had his leave extended by a day so he could attend. Whew!

Lunch was Mexican food at a local place called Rosa’s. Pretty simple fare, and if nothing else … quick. Kel and Christina had arrived in town in the meantime, so they joined us at lunch.

Next came a piano recital by Caleb and Luke and the rest of the students of their teacher. Surprisingly, it only took about 30 minutes. Of course Luke and Caleb were the stars of the show.

After stopping by the house to change clothes, we then headed to Baylor’s football field (McLane Stadium) for the church’s annual youth ministry Turkey Bowl football tournament. They had around 80 kids signed up for the event. They also introduced their new youth pastor. Talk about a full day!

Hebrews‬ ‭13‬:‭16 says, “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”

Father, thank you for getting the rest of the LaMarque Vaughan’s here safely. Amen.

November 13 - “Football weather”

We managed to leave the house around 11:30 for our next excursion. This time we headed to Waco, ostensibly to go to the Texas Baptist Convention. Of course, it being in Waco comes with the added incentive of a place to stay that contains grandkids. And speaking of grandkids, we picked up a few extra to go with us. Micah and Josiah crammed their stuff into the car and get then crammed themselves in after it. There was no seeing out the back window for the driver, but we got it all in there. Of course we also hit some serious construction traffic almost immediately. It did slow us down, but we persevered.

After a quick stop for gas and some food - at Buc-ees of course - we zipped into Bryan for Zakary’s football game. It was cold. Real football weather. Somewhere in the 40’s. Miserable. And to top it off, the bad guys won 33-20. That’s actually a really close game for six-man football. That ended the season, though. A good showing in the playoffs for a first-year team.

Colossians‬ ‭3‬:‭2 says, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

Father, thanks for the safe trip to the football game. And thanks for coats and blankets. Amen.

November 12 - “Good news/Sad news”

We heard some sad news yesterday. Nathan and Cailyn took their old boxer Abby in to be put down. She was not doing well at all. Not eating much at all. They suspected she had cancer that was beginning to really take its toll. She had been around pretty much since Cailyn was born, so 13 years or so. That’s a long life for a large dog like a boxer.

Cailyn spent the night with us last night so Chris could take her to a doctor appointment for some pain she has been having in her foot for over a month. It hasn’t slowed her down much. She has continued playing soccer with it. They got April on the phone so she could hear what was going on. Bottom line? Well … here’s what Cailyn heard: “Do whatever you want. If it hurts, don’t do it.” Here’s what April heard: “Stay off of it as much as possible for three weeks.”  Apparently, Nana stayed out of it altogether. But Cailyn doesn’t have to wear a boot or get a cast or anything like that. I could only hope my doctor appointment went as well later in the day.

And speaking of my appointment, I was scheduled to get one of those steroid shots in my hip. My time was 2:00. Or so I thought. Come to find out, in spite of what was on the books, it was actually closer to 3:30 before I was seen. The procedure only took about 30 seconds, though. well, maybe two minutes if you include the prep time. A quick ultrasound look to make sure no blood vessels were in the way, a squirt of icy cold stuff, a shot of lidocaine, then the steroid shot (which, by the way, Chris said was done with one of those Loooong needles.  I couldn’t see it.  They made me lie flat). Boom. Wipe it off and put a bandaid on. See ya in three months if you need another one. Should be able to tell a difference day or two. Woohoo!

1 Peter 4:10 says, Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

Father, thanks for Cailyn’s good foot news. Be with her and April and Nathan as they mourn for Abby. Amen.

November 11 - “Being there”

I was up, so I went ahead and moved the car at 6:30 a.m. to our neighbor’s driveway. Good thing. Our driveway was completely blocked the rest of the day by the roadwork.

We left around 10 for a funeral in Texas City for Seasider Sandy’s dad. He was a believer, so the service was upbeat and celebratory. Lots of laughter and a few tears in the reminiscing. It was really good to see several other Seasiders and Pastor Kel there. Sandy appreciated our being there a lot.

We went next over to Gringos to eat and to use up some gift cards. That place is Chris’ favorite Mexican food place. I like the free ice cream cone machine (which happened to be on the fritz, sadly). On the way home we stopped by Academy to see if they had an Astros championship hat. No chance. Oh well. I’ll wait.

Back home, the street was still torn up and they were working hard. We had a big pile of crushed something or other right in front of our house, just waiting to be spread out. They finally got to it around 4, and by the time the left, we had an open path to our driveway. The street is still kind of a mess, but it is passable. Our home group folks were all able to get here last night.

Psalms 34:4-5 says, I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.”

Father, please be with Sandy and her family as they walk with you through this tough time. Thank you that it is made easier knowing her Dad was a Christian. Amen.

November 10 - “Someone must know someone”

We anticipated being completely trapped yesterday. So much so that we arranged everything so we wouldn’t have to leave the house. The construction cats got started on the street a little after 8. By 11 they were still digging down by the end of the street. There was a slab of concrete there that defined the water drainage landscaping. Apparently, it was defying all efforts to break through. Well, to break through easily, anyway. They finally managed by combining forces. Two big cats plus a handheld concrete cutter. One of the workers told me that they were replacing the fire hydrant before they get started on the street pipes. Why not? Let’s get it all done.

Later in the day I went outside yet again to check on the process.  OK, and to stare at the big machinery hard at work tearing up the street.  I watched as one of the workers jumped onto the chain and rode with the new fire hydrant as they set it into place.  I wondered about it, though.  It sure seemed to be much deeper into the ground than the old one.  Hope future fire fighters can get their big wrenches in there when they need to open it up.

As I watched in fascination, I heard my name, “Hey, Pastor Kelley!”  I located the sound coming from one of the workers and recognized a Seasider who had come to work with the crew.  I haven’t seen him in quite a while, so it was really good to catch up with him and get the news about his family.  His kids are growing up and sounds like they are doing really well.  He also told me that “someone must know someone and have some connections.”  Seems that when the work order came for this job, it was designated “Highest Priority.”  He recognized the street as ours, so he was excited to come be a part of it.  I don’t have any idea who that “someone” might have been, but whoever you are, thanks for your persistence.  The streets of the neighborhood sure needed it.

As it ultimately turned out, they didn’t even make it to our driveway.  I guess that means we will be socked in for today as well.  I better send out a text to the home group to beware the streets when they come tonight.  I plan to move our car over to a neighbor’s driveway in a little bit as well.  There are a few places we need to go today.

1 Peter 4:8 says, Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

Father, please be with Jesus and his family.  Draw them close to you and grant them happiness.  Amen.

November 9 - “Trapped?”

So much for sleeping in. Or for just making it to 5 or 6, for that matter. Guess I jinxed it yesterday when I mentioned it in the blog. Next night? Awake at 2:30 with hip issues. Into the recliner around 3. Once there I did doze off and stay relatively comfortable until almost 6. Sure hope that shot on Friday will take care of this pain.

We were kind of trapped in our house for most of the morning. The city decided to replace some water lines (much, much needed work) before they complete the street repaving. They parked their trailer full of pipes right in front of our house. Our front yard in effect became the staging area.

We did manage to squeeze our way out of the driveway long enough to go to lunch with Dale and Debi. Dale is pastor of Elliott Baptist Church outside of Hearne, Texas. They have been coming down to Seaside for many years. We enjoyed a Shrimp n Stuff lunch and the company.

After lunch we made our yearly Thanksgiving trip to the grocery store. That meant picking up, along with what we needed for the week, turkeys and oil for frying. That oil has literally doubled in price since we started frying turkeys instead of baking them. It’s almost not worth it. As it stands now, I guess we’ll only have one pot going. Makes for a long day with seven turkeys to fry at an hour apiece.

Isaiah 26:3 says, You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

Father, please be with Dale and Debi as they face decisions about retirement and Debi’s knee surgery. Amen.

November 8 - “Amid a Million”

I actually managed to stay in bed until almost six yesterday. I was awake off and on from about 2:30 on, but I was able to find a somewhat comfortable position without retiring to the recliner. I did my back exercises before Chris made her appearance. Then we went for a walk. Well, I made it a mile and a half. Chris went longer.

We realized about lunchtime that yesterday was the first day in a while that we didn’t have to be anywhere in particular or do anything special. Chris washed clothes. I wrote a story.

Oh, we did watch the Astros parade on TV. And as a bonus there, we actually saw Noa, Josiah, Ezra, and Micah on the TV feed. Yep. They were right there among the million plus people who were suddenly rabid Astros fans. Exciting stuff.

The rest of the day really was one of relaxing.  I broke out a new jigsaw puzzle. Chris worked on some sewing.  We watched two or three movies on the new Great American Family Network.  That’s the one that is the big rival to the Hallmark Channel.  So far I do like it, but then all we ever do is tape the movies and fast forward through commercials. Guess it remains to be seen if we can tell a difference.

Psalms 19:7 says, “The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.”

Father, thank you for taking care of Kel and his family while they were ensconced amid those million people.  It helped that we got to catch a glimpse of them on TV.  Amen.
